Shifter Replacement, Compatibility?
I bought an old bike to permanently mount to my indoor trainer. It has Shimano M020 shifters that don't work, don't shift.
I will attempt to fix them. It could be something simple or they may need to be replaced. We'll see but I have never worked on shifters before.
If they have to be replaced, how interoperable are handlebar mounted shifters? Since these have two levers for each shifter (an up and a down), is it correct to assume I need that same type of shifter as a replacement? As I'll be searching for used parts via CL, FB, etc, what shifters are compatible with that model?

Is it they won't shift or won't stay after shifting.?
Standard "repair" for Shimano indexed shifters is to give them a good flush with WD40 while working them and relube. The grease hardens and the ratchet pawl hangs up not holding the shift.
If it won't shift at all check the cable.
Lots of videos out there on flushing.

Those were terrible shifters, even back then. For an indoor trainer, just get some cheap thumb shifters like SL-TX30.

I usually look on eBay, Amazon is usually higher priced. Any LBS or online bike shop will work.
There are a number of brands, but they are usually friction shifting. Basically just rotate the lever to whatever gear, no click or index. I find that I just use a large chainring on an indoor trainer, but you may decide to get a set of shifters.
Hopefully yoir existing cables and housings will work.
