First Ride of 2020

I did 22 miles this morning. Ride started at a brisk 34 F. The perfect way to start the first day of a new year.

I did my last ride yesterday. 37 miles and 3,700 feet of climbing. Will ride again tomorrow maybe since I have to take the old woman for her last radiation treatment. The biggest problem is the itching.` Since that is a 10 am appointment I should get back early enough to put in a fast 22 miles. I need a road test of my latest build - the Basso Loto last year of the steel bike..

32.5 miles this morning with my local bike club. I haven't ridden with them in months and was warmly welcomed back. I look forward to weight loss this year, so my response to their welcome back comments was, "My plan this year is for you to see less of me, more frequently."

That is way cool! I thought I was doing well on the specific bike longevity, starting the 28th year with my Ochsner, bought new in '92, with a 21 mile ride this morning. Last year, I tore the bike down, had the bike powder coated, and I rebuilt it with a mix of original and new components/parts. I started out at 7:35 with the temp at 31F, very light breeze and all sunshine. Nice way to start 2020.

My paint is original, complete with battle scars, like the rider, i did rebuild the wheels, with new rims, repacked hubs, BB, headset and new chain before Eroica last April. Other than that mostly original.

I was on my way out for a short ride with my daughter (it's cold, she's 8), when two houses from home my front tire explodes! Took the tire right off the rim and split the tube up the side. Thankfully I wasn't going fast.

Confounded I walk home to get a different bike (my daughter is stubborn and insists we go right now!)

I get back outside a few minutes later with a different bike and a granola bar for me and her (to try and soften up that attitude!). While I'm standing on the sidewalk in front of my house I look down the street towards where my tire exploded and I see a guy in all black walking in the driveway. I think, he kinda looks like a cop. Maybe something bad happened to Gene. Then I see two cop cars, another unmarked car, and three more cops. I'm thinking, what? Then it dawns on me that there's a shotspotter on the roof of a school another block away - they think my tire explosion was a gunshot! The cops all arrived in less than 5 minutes! I walk over and explain what happened, to which they reluctantly agree is possible, when one of them says, I have a recording, let's listen to it - so from his phone he plays the recording of my tire exploding! They agree it sounded kind of "airy", are glad to not continue looking for a casing, and take off! (They didn't want to see the tire)

The tire was filled last Friday by my LBS after it was in for something else. I rode it the 1 mile home. It was way higher psi than I fill them to but didn't seem crazy hard (they're 37c which I usually run about 45psi), but the explosion is a mystery. Tubes were newish but have a few hundred miles on them at least with no issues. The temperature difference from basement to outside might have been 20 degrees.

Anyway, Happy New Year! Off with a bang!

Kicked off the year with a 23.6 mile "Hike and Ride" of which I'm going to claim 20 as ridden. Used a more rugged walking trail to bypass some rail trail construction on the way up. A few miles up the actual path I was able to shed some layers, though learned my tights are definitely not windproof!

Plus while I was turning around I figured out where the 36 inch wheels that my friends and I "lost" have been ending up!

36ers all... met a Dirty Sixer with unicycle wheels on it.

The day didn't start too great. I tripped moving the tandem out of the shed, tearing some comfortable jeans and scraping my knee. However, that didn't stop us from a pleasant 26.8 mile ride in 50ish temperatures. The racer boys were out in force on the trail but I don't think we saw even one e-bike. In spite of the scraped knee a nice day to begin 2020.

When out for an hour or so of mtb riding. Would have been a great ride if only I hadn't bruised some ribs right at the end of the ride. Things can only go up from here!

Only got in 16 miles - 27 deg. cloudy and windy, with wet & dirty roads and frozen slush scattered all over the place. Still - I got to ride outside on New Years Day so I'll take what I can get.

My only real complaint is it took over an hour to clean the bike!

Yesterday I shoveled out the end of the driveway and went to the gym. Pulled a muscle in the right quad and strained my back while recovering from the squat I was in. What a day. Did get 10 minutes on the treadmill.

7 miles on NYD for our 11-month old’s first ever bike ride, on the back of his mommy’s bike. I had his older siblings on the back of the Yuba Mundo. It was mommy’s first ride since her pregnancy, so she was feeling it in the legs yesterday evening.

Closed out 2019 with a 115 miler and opened 2020 with 110 miler. Have a local 12 hour event next Saturday and will be starting a bit early, winds 15+mph expected as day wears on, and going to try for 200+.
