50+ Bike, anyone?
#26
I purchased my ParisSport bicycle new in June 1970. So it's about to turn 50. It started life as 10-speed and has gone through many incarnations. It's been a fixed-gear since 2006, with it's frame-and-fork the only truly original component. The handlebars are the originals, although chopped & flipped. Here it is in it's 2020 incarnation.

Real nice! Does the left dropout have a shark's tooth hanging down as far as the derailleur hanger on the drive side? If so I think it could be 1967. I have one with all the same decals and coloring that I think is 1967, with the tooth dropout.

I'm 63 but one of my bikes turns 50 this year. The frame is a chrome 1970 Raleigh Professional Mk.1 that I bought from a member of the Classic Rendezvous list last fall.
It rides beautifully and fits like I've always had it. It's mid-winter here in NYC but I'm looking forward to a great season on this 50-year old bike!

Other senior citizens: 1980 Woodrup frame, 1980 Masi Gran Criterium bike (both 40 years, the responsible adults), 1967 Peugeot PX-10 frame (53 years old), 1970 Peugeot UO-8 bike (50 years old), and 1969 Raleigh Sport bike (51 years old). The excitable young folks (all bikes): 2011 Terraferma, 2011 Georgena Terry Cote Donana, 2005 Mondonico Futura Leggero, 2002 Breezer Liberty, 1997 Georgena Terry Classic,1984 Mondonico (convalescing well after her collision), 1984 Trek 610 Mule Road Bike, agile again with her prosthetic high-offset fork.

Thanks! The paint and decals on mine were done by me and not chosen to be period correct. I just happen to like that particular era of decals. It does have the "horn" on the non-drive side drop-out but many years of PX10's had those. I think the decals and any date codes on the components are probably your best indicator of age.

Hopefully this year I'll build up one or two 50+ bikes. ... New to me....
It will be another dozen years before my current 50+ bike will also be owned by me for 50+ years.
As it is, it is one of the things I've owned longest in my life.

Two more, a 1969 Raleigh Robin Hood and a 1968 Schwinn Paramount. The Raleigh is all original; the Schwinn is pretty much all original.

Where do you get the parts for the older bikes. I,ve been wanting to do that for a while now. I have a specialized roubaix and I would like to get something with the same geometry or close to it. Thanks

Classic is as classic does
Nice to look at, but I don't want to give up index shifting. I like to stir the gears a lot.

I like modern bikes and index shifting as well. I recently rebuilt my early 70s Fuji Finest with suntour bar cons and cyclone derailleurs. I was surprised by how good the shifting is.

My road fleet is split between index and friction. Index shifting spoiled me but riding the Campy NR shifted bikes are so classy in the sound and feel that going back to index feels almost automatic. I have an ‘87 Miyata 712 with full 105. That bike has a total dialed in feel with the smoothness of that 105 system.

The date stamp on my Rudge Sports 3-speed is 1962, so it was made when I was one year old.
