Took a ride from Rangely, Maine to Stratton, Maine this morning. It is a little over 20 miles each way. Nice morning, cool and a little breezy. I saw a moose on the way back, but she went into the woods before I could get the camera ready. This is in Stratton, not too far from Sugarloaf U.S.A. ski area.

More great ride reports and pics, d&l, otg, JM. (Looks like a lot of work to ride even a fat-tire on sand! The scenery makes it worth the effort though.)
Had an interesting experience on my commute this morning. While I was negotiating a modest but bumpy downhill maybe a mile from the house a coyote ran across the road about 20ft in front of me with a rabbit in its mouth. Yes, the neighborhood and surrounding areas have rabbits, and coyotes occasionally. Other than being peace-loving and creating a Disney-like environment the rabbits seem to be an inert element in the world here except for one thing. They, or at least these, love to eat zinnias. Zinnias are also attractants for hummingbirds and monarch butterflies (endangered even if not officially designated so). Keeping rabbits out of the zinnia patch requires some creative use of fine-mesh fencing. It's nice to see they serve another purpose in the great cycle of eat-or-be-eaten. No pics, it all happened too fast.
Had an interesting conversation about vintage bikes with another commuter, a 30-something I think. (I'm a 60-something.) We met up at the 4 Corners intersection of Woburn and I commented on his horizontal TT bike. (It was an aluminuminumium Trek.) I was on the 531C Gazelle and he noticed the world championship stripes right away. He had just started that commute this year, though seemingly running later than I usually do because I was a bit late. We spent the next few miles talking about the route and older bikes and his biking vs. family commitments. A nice way to cover some miles.

129 km Kampong Cham, my home, to Phnom Penh. I did real well for 70 or so km and started to cramp in my thighs??? raised my seat post 1cm and they went away. Had to stop for 45 minutes due to a huge thunderstorm. It was real humid, hot, and headwinds. Drank 12 liters of water, 1.5 liters of coffee, 2 fresh coconuts, and 1 coke.

Did a 17 mile loop yesterday in search of bikey stuff. Some of my photos aren't loading up to flickr, so I included some ones from recent days too. Riding a 1995 Trek 820, which I "upgraded" with nicer vintage components. Love this ride. It fits well too.

Nothing much exciting but Saturday and Sunday combined ~35 miles of pleasant bike trails in the Walnut Creek, CA area. I haven't been riding much since April so it was great getting out on a bike again. Rode my 1990 Bianchi Mondiale with Columbus SLX and triple cranks which makes for great climbing.

~ Part I ~
I got in two very fun, very different rides this past weekend - one on two wheels, one on none.
Saturday am a buddy and I had a good ~40mi wander around my area. The first stop was at a farmer's market in hopes of some fresh fruit. No dice.
I moved to this part of the state somewhat recently and am slowly expanding the area of my riding routes. This exploration found a few roads that are going on the short list. Once we passed through two more heavily populated towns we hit farm country - great riding - we found quiet roads leading up and down New England rolling hills and through dense, shaded woods. Fairly early in a small dirt path caught our attention which wound up leading to some secluded double track that we rode for a bit. We'll return another time to find the ends of this trail.
This was the first ride with a new frame bag (Revelate Tangle in LG). It has tons of room and doesn't interfere with grabbing water bottles or riding in general. It'd be nice if the lower front corner fit this bike a bit better, but it wasn't really designed for this type of frame, at least not as a limiting design consideration. The bag is light enough that I think it will just stay on this bike for every ride. At least for a while.
Leaving the woods we found two great sustained descents, my buddy hit about 48 - I was happy floating around 40 on new roads with woods running to the edge, limiting visibility around bends. It's unfortunate to not have pics of the best part of the ride, but I didn't want to slow once we hit that section. Fantastic riding with virtually no cars. The surrounding woods offered plenty of shade and an excellent barrier from the wind.
Maybe 2mi from the start of the two descents:
Once we hit the more populated towns it seemed we had headwinds from all directions.
I regret not bringing the Garmin to log the ride. I'm sure I can piece together all of the turns with a map, but the Garmin keeps other useful info as well. Time to get back into that habit. Once back home we gulped some water and packed his Jeep to head to his area.

We met up with two other friends, loaded the canoes and hit the CT river. We set up camp on the island just off of 12 o'clock of the canoe I was in in the above picture.
Jerk chicken fajitas for dinner. Plenty of cured meat, cheese and beer, too.
About half-past 5 Sunday am:

Sorry no pics but a hoot of a morning ride. Rode out to the Independence Day parade and I on the '57 JC Higgins. Had appropriate color coordinated attire for today but nothing close to what forum member Sprocket Turner showed up in. Proudly sporting some mighty USA red white and blue top to bottom. ------ And no pics, sorry.
Towards the end we jumped on in the line. Though I didn't do any showing off wheelies or stoppy stands

Champion of the Low End
I explored some new gravel to the north and west of one of my usual routes. I'm trying to string together as many miles of nearly continuous gravel as I can to come up with a 40-mile epic gravel ride starting and ending at home. Got about 23 miles in with at least 13-14 miles of gravel and a flat tire for good measure.
