If it's the first generation, introduced in 1989, you will be able to run a cassette or freewheel with a maximum 30-tooth sprocket. The range (front and rear) is 30.

I have a 1st gen on a Viner with 50/34 chainrings and 14-28 7spd freewheel and friction shifters. It's a great derailleur.

Great!!

Thank you so much for the responses and knowledge.

Greatly appreciated

I'm not sure what version or date of the RD, but sounds like a 14 -24 or 28 should work !!

Thanks again!!

I could not open the link between the athena 4 and 5

Is there a way to tell the difference?

Would the range be different between the two?

Your comment does not make much sense to me I'm afraid.

There was only one sized derailleur offered for the first generation Athena. It would work with either a six- or seven-speed freewheel or cassette that had a low sprocket of 11 teeth and a maximum sprocket of 30 teeth. Either a 14-24 or 14-28 cassette/freewheel works.
