I have a FX 7300 and I'm changing the gearing to go faster.

Since you live in Illinois it shouldn't be too hard to find some headwinds to ride into. That should satisfy your need to ride slow. And have somebody pick you up after riding into the headwind. You certainly don't want to be riding with the wind at your back.

No ZZTop or Spiderbait on your Ipod.
Replace it with Enya and Barry Manilow.
That'll slow ya a bit.

Barry Manilow?
He said he wanted to go slow. He didn't say anything about wanting to be tortured.
Spiderbait? Never heard of them.

I did a 30 mile ride this evening, and when I looked at my average speed after I got home, it was a blistering 12 MPH. What's great is that I really had a good time, and was glowing when I came in the door.

Maybe you should just click the cycle computer over to ODOMETER and forget about speed. Your body will pace itself comfortably to where it wants to be. Instead of obsesseing about speed you'll just enjoy enjoy the ride, kinda like when you were a kid.

Now I find myself pushing faster than I want on the BMX cruiser and P.1 I start out slow and try to keep it that way. However after a few miles I find myself pushing it-really getting the cranks spinning
Is there any cure for this malady of speed?

One answer might be a fixed gear or single speed with low enough gearing to limit your top speed.

If you really want to go slow and truly enjoy your ride, consider packing a camera. Meander along, keeping your eyes open for interesting photo opportunities, and stop whenever the urge strikes you. You may find, as I have, that an entire new and beautiful world opens up to you. Here's a little photo essay of my recent birthday ride. Not saying these are the greatest snaps in the world, but they were all found on a leisurely ramble. Speed was of no importance whatsover, and finding these shots provided me with a lot of fun. It might work the same for you.

Great pictures, Blackberry.
I generally have my camera with me on rides. I also do the time keeping for a volunteer bike group and have a member who generally attaches a picture to his report of things along the trails. I've received pictures of flowers, riders along the trail and lots of animals.

You need to change your definition of slow. See, if you thought 25 mph was where 'too fast' started, you'd already be far enough below that point.
Problem solved!
