Interesting discoveries while on rides?
What have you come across? Animals? Lost tools? General weirdness (I'm looking at you, Portland)? Share them here.
Just a regular turtle, south Lake Union:
I had a few more, but Flickr is being finicky right now. Maybe later...

Pedalin' Erry Day
Last week I was commuting home from work at night, came around a corner on the bike path, and was quite surprised to find a man standing in the middle of the path juggling flaming torches, accompanied by a couple of people with video cameras.

A few years back passed a couple of cops standing over a dead body. This was in Memphis, so while interesting, perhaps not particularly unusual.

Halloween, 2012. Lots of weird stuff on the road this particular day. But the oddest sight was not the science teacher driving a car load of mice bound for the snake cage - "murder mice" was the actual phrase he used I believe...frankly that's become de rigeur in our neighborhood.
Nope, the oddest sighting was seeing Elvis with his (LONG) hair down, washing his tour bus himself. I nearly broke my neck with the double take. Slammed on my brakes and pulled over.
Me: "Mind if I take a photo?"
Elvis: "Get lost."
Chill out, Elvis. I'm shooting your picture anyway.

Monday morning, able to get within 10 feet or so of him ... couldn't get a photo of the two does I spooked yesterday morning, and I didn't have a camera the time I rolled up on a very very large alligator snapping turtle crossing the rail trail. Him I waited for. Respectfully.
Road scores have included cash, a couple of open end/box end wrenches (on different rides in different locations), knives, and a new-looking Leatherman tool in its fabric case.
Best bizarre moment, category of where-the-hell-is-my-camera-when-I-need-it?, was a mid-December ride near Ware Shoals, SC, about a dozen years ago. I came around a corner and found myself riding past a front lawn with more than two dozen Santas of various shapes and sizes in the yard. There had been a violent storm the night before and more than half of them were face down. It looked like the aftermath of a shootout at the Santa School.

1. Money, usually one or a few coins, but occasionally folding money, and once a wad including $20's, a $10 & a $5.
2. Tools, including a small crescent wrench, pliers, several Heyco brand metric wrenches + a nice 8mm made in Italy.
3. Several pocket knives, much the worse for being run over by traffic, + a freshly lost, pristine, Swiss Army knife that now lives in my fishing vest.
4. Beat up Frame pump. Don

Here along the Mississippi, and in the around Shreveport, I see cool birds and turtles and snakes so regularly that I don't stop for photos (though I should have the time a cottonmouth was sunning itself in the road). But a bald eagle feasting on an armadillo was unusual enough to make me stop short of my intended turn-around and take a few photos:

Last week, I accidentally ran over a snake (two foot, Black Racer?) that came out and another rider spooked back toward me (it looked like it was ok and continued back into the grass). It might not sound interesting, but I was in Brooklyn, NY.

Sorry, but that is some type of pond turtle. A box turtle has a high domed shell like this. I am no expert, but I do know a few of the common species in the Mid-Atlantic area. Very nice photo BTW.

I got chased by a couple Sand Hill cranes. Usually, they're pretty shy birds, so I imagine there were chicks down in the tall grass that I couldn't see.

A fiver on Williams Ave in Portland last fall. It's one of the major north-south bicycles artery in Portland, so it was shocking to see it there, and no one around to claim it but me.

I see turtles and beavers a lot when riding through our park. Sometimes a heron but haven't gotten a photo yet.
I see deer quite a bit in the neighborhood behind mine also.
Trying to find the pictures of the gigantic beaver I saw last...

Rattlesnake! It had apparently been hit by a car and injured, so was very pissed off. I rode past it thinking it was a stick or piece of rope. The second it rattled I knew what it was so jumped hard on the pedals. It struck and hit the chainstay, missing my leg by inches. Needless to say, the adrenalin rush helped with the remainder of the climb. I've encountered other rattlesnakes while riding, but none that attacked me.
