Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your 8/2/08 ride

Did my first 50 miles today. Met a nice guy (Neal) on the ride which was good, since I usually don't see anyone not on a horse. Hopefully I can get in my first century in a couple months.

How was your ride?

1:17:25 solo (the best rides, like the best sex, are done alone) moderate, rural, no dog attacks so pretty good.

I rode 40 with a local group. Lead group was about 15-20 riders. I need some good rest or more training cause apparently I blow. I can sit on their wheel, but can't pull for very long. Some guys are up there pulling at 25-28 for several minutes. I feel bad I can't do that for them. Of course one of them was dropped on the hills because he doesn't understand spinning. He just long gears it all day long.

It was still a nice ride though. Went through a off beat hill section through a neighborhood that had quick and tight downhills. If I knew there would be no cars that would be a lot of fun to fly down at 30+.

Still a long way to go for me. And here I thought I was making progress from my 2 weeks of commuting to work.

I don't have much time today because of other commitments, so I just did a quick 13 miles near my house. Mostly flat with a few rolling hills. I'm hoping to do closer to 50 miles tomorrow morning.

I set a new personal record! 27 miles. I averaged 13.7 mph. It wasn't too windy but the humidity was awful. I'm getting better and better at hills. I don't feel like dying after each hill anymore!

Maybe next Saturday I can try for 30 miles!

Biofreeze is great stuff!

As a new rider, I think I am entitled to one of these... no issue riding in the rain, but I was going to ride a new route and not knowing what to expect, I would rather be stranded on a suny day, if that's OK with you guys

30 miles on W&OD. Stop by Performance, today extra 15% off from anything you buy. Got myself Terry saddle. It's different then my San Marco that came with the bike. It's little harder. I will try for couple weeks, if no good will return.

I felt OK when I woke up. Had an egg sandwich and left for a mountain bike ride. Got to the start, had stomach pains and a minor shake that felt like low blood sugar. I went out on the ride anyway. We were going to do two laps of a ~ 10 mile course. I finished lap one, after almost puking two or three times, and decided to bail for the day. I felt like a bonk was coming on but a gel and water made no difference. Figured it a better idea to get home and be able to ride tomorrow than take a header in to a rock or a tree if my swimming head made me screw up :|. Hopefully a road ride tomorrow.

Had a short but great ride with my Six year old. She was on the trailer bike me pulling with hard tail mountain bike on road slicks. It was her PB of 10 miles@13.2 mph avg. her third time out. It was a lot of fun.

The last couple of weeks I have been taking it pretty easy with intensity on my rides as I was starting to get burned out. I'm now starting to feel well rested so I put a bit of intensity into my morning ride.

We have a rail trail that goes nearly straight east for about 15 miles that is heavily used on the weekends. Parallel to it is a 4-lane highway with a wide paved shoulder that is perfect for riding. Today I took the highway out and just hammered it and then rode the rail trail back. I happened to run into someone I knew just past the trailhead and rode back pretty slowly as we chatted the whole way back.

It was nice to ride in only a little bit of rain for a change.

Did 55 miles with a friend...mostly flat with some small rollers. Was the first time I've been out since Tuesday and there were some new roads, so it was great.

AWESOME!

I love riding with my children. I wish they would want to ride more often other than commuting back and forth to school.
