Anybody haul their dog in a bike trailer?
I am thinking about getting a trailer for my dog. I'd like to take her on my long rides but am wondering how safe that is. Does anyone have any experience taking a dog in a trailer on a long ride with the cars going by?

Years ago we took our medium sized (35lb) dog in a Yak (single wheel) trailer. We had him on a short leash so he could sit but couldn't jump out. He never did seem to like it. Out on the trail we'd let him run along but he'd tire after a few miles so we put him back in the trailer. He still didn't like it. Had we done it since he was a puppy he likely would have been more accepting of it.

There is one woman in my town who rides one dog in a trailer while the other bike-jors beside her. When I asked, she told me that they both used to run, but now that the lab is old and arthritic she doesn't want him to feel left out.
She was my inspiration. However, my dog is small (9 lbs), so I have an alternative setup:
It's just a standard cargo basket with a towel on the bottom for comfort. There are two mini-leashes (from Petsmart, for car seat belt attachments) attached to her harness, and then to the basket with doubled extra-strength zip ties. She LOVES to stick her face out beside my butt while I ride to get the wind in her face!
I prefer to stay on MUPs when I have her as a passenger, but roads--and even busy roads--are necessary for e.g. the vet.

My Bichon loves to ride in a kid trailer.
Initially I was not sure if she liked to ride so I made something simple to try it out and she loved it.
Then I bought a kid trailer from Nashbar. In the summer, we ride pretty much everyday to the local park. She will walk in the park and then we ride back. She always looks around when riding.
That cheap cruiser is pretty much permanently attached to the trailer and we call it the dog's bike. I screwed a sheet of ply wood to the bottom of the trailer so there is a more stable support for the dog. It has been a few year now. We first started riding together in 2008.

Years ago I made a dog trailer out of an old golf bag cart and a pet carrier. Spent three nights putting it together. The dog cried the whole 10 minute ride. She wouldn't go in it after that. Got rid of the trailer.

Saw this guy on the road outside my work in Tulsa, OK yesterday. He's touring the US with dog in basket. Made it 5000 miles so far. I forget the model of the bike he mentions it on the website, I had to look it up, sounds cool.
Wish I'd have been riding instead of driving, might have rode a mile or 2 with him.

2manybikes has used a trike to pedal his dog Bailey around over the years and could let you know how his dog does in the trike. I don't know if he's used a trailer or not.

I see people with their dog in a trailer all the time.
There is a 3 legged dog that comes into our department, therapy dog for the staff, that has a trailer/stroller. He tires easily with just 1 front and 2 rear legs so the owner pushes him around. That thing could hook right up to a bike. He doesn't like the trailer though.

Awesome! I used to have a kid trailer that I used for groceries but I think we threw it out when we moved. Dumb dumb dumb! I like the looks of the pet specific trailers. I might have to get one. Expensive though.
