Spent a couple of hours today on mrs non-fixie's Snel. Changed the tires, for no other reason than 'because', replaced the original MAFAC brake pads with Koolstops and added a decaleur and a bag.
I'm even thinking of adding a rear rack. If this Corona thing persists, we might actually have to resort to carrying our own luggage!

Sorry I couldn't resist. Ik kann ein betje Nederlands praten.

1979 Trek 510 parts bin build
I picked up a 1979 Trek 510 a while back. It's a great bike with a full Ishiwata 022 frameset. The bike was low temp silver brazed. The bike was in good shape. It's time to build it up. I'll keep the derailleurs (nothing wrong with suntour) but the wheels, crank, shifters, headset, pedals, and brakes will all be replaced. Basically I'm just keeping the original front and rear derailleurs, seatpost, and saddle. I'll try to use period correct parts and build the bike up with 3 x 5 gearing. This is going to be a completely parts bin build.
I've stripped it down to the frame (the weight is very good at 6.2 lbs with headset). The paint is in good shape but there are some major scratches on the downtube I'll need to deal with.
This is the bike as found in the wild:

As a matter of fact, it is pretty quick for what it is - a sturdy bike built for carrying loads. It is definitely not a racing bike, but it is comfortable, and the Maxi-car hubs roll more smoothly than anything I've encountered before, so once you get it up to speed it's relatively easy to maintain that speed. Which makes for surprisingly decent averages in our windy flatlands.

Well folks,
I'm sick about this. I've been restoring this Peloton from my racing days for the last year. It was in a fire that damaged the paint, so It got a new powder coating and new decals. Today mocked it up with a nice group and a borrowed set of wheels. Without the tires It has a stand over height that is about 4 cm too tall for my current leg length. This damned thing of getting shorter as I get older is driving me nutz! Looks like I'm gonna hafta give this one up for someone who can fit on it. Help a stoopid brother out and give me some recommendations as to what to do. Thanks MH

I thought we shrink in our backs, not our legs. How can this be?

Tom,
Maybe my back has gotten longer on the bottom end! No clearance without the tires on the wheels, so It looks improbable that I will be riding this one. Maybe with the seat all the way down against the top tube. I'm gonna finish the build, and see where it winds up. Likely will be looking for a new home. Smiles, MH

I've never tried one of those tables, Tom, but I'm considering getting one. Some quick internet research reveals that while these tables are meant for stretching the spine, they will also lengthen the legs and joints in the legs. Maybe its good therapy? Maybe I'll ask my chiropractor. Then again, he would probably poo on anything that would keep people out of his office!

J dawg,
Yeah that dryer action cooked the paint off of eight vintage frames including my built for team Trek 770. Warped half of the wheels. Blew the tires off of all of them (Clement sew ups), melted eight Corsa saddles, and all of the bar tape and pro racing numbers. Over $11K in just the eight bikes. That was the limit of my off site liability as they were in storage in a friends vacant garage. No one around at midnight when the fire started and definitely no one around at 2AM when the fire inspector got there. I'm just glad no one was hurt! Still the getting shorter thing is bugging me. I guess I'm not growing old gracefully. Smiles, MH

Slowly overhauling this 1973ish Nishiki Competition step-through. Everything is remaining the same aside from swapping the drops for porteur bars, shifters for barcons and the sadddle for a Brooks Flyer. Apologies for photo size.

Been away from this forum for a while as I crossed over the the Darkside (the modern MTB world) but the quarantine time has reignited my passion for vintage bikes. My neighbor has had this vintage steel mtb, a Mongoose Switchback. This bike was rode a few time and hung in the barn, and it shows. Even after sitting for so long, the gears, shifters, and brakes work absolutely perfect and everything was indexed. I did a good clean and wash on the bike, added some different bars, added some wider 2.2 Nevengals, and swapped the saddle out.
Here's how I found it:
After a wash and swapped tires and saddle:
If anyone is interested, I created a video but not sure if YT links are allowed?

I also pulled out my old roadie, my Schwinn Tempo. I first built it with a hodge podge of parts from the frame and fork up, with a different wheelset. It never really felt right, so I swapped over some basic LX stuff from my Miele, and swapped a different wheelset with some nice 28c tires. Its a tight fit and I just cruise it, but its still fast for its age. The shifting is perfect and its dead silent. Love that bike and I dont think I can ever get ride of it.
Here was the first iteration. The tires were too small for my build, and the shifting was never right because the chainring was waaay to big.
Swapped over some bits and here how it sits. She's no beauty queen, but far better than how I found it

Finished this '91 Trek 400. I bought it for its Mavic/Superbe wheelset that I needed for a Schwinn. I found a Trek wheelset in super shape that came off a similar, but older model. Most of the components were already on it, including the triple crankset, ARX rear mech (without a barrel adjuster), and Accushift shifters. With a Suntour 6-speed freewheel I added, it's indexing rather well. I doubt that will last for any long term, though. It just uses brake housing for the RD. But the right shifter can switch to friction pretty easily. If my niece can stand over it, it's all hers.
Total spent on this once-$50-bike is now $200, but includes new consumables, a new cartridge bb, and some nicer parts from my bin, like the seatpost and saddle. But I did get an awesome wheelset out of the deal.

I need to set fit on it and do some aligning of stuff but overall a fun build. A mix of 600 Tricolor at the front and back with some 9 speed era Dura Ace and Ultegra in the middle and 6800 hubs because the wheelset was reasonably priced and this time I didn't want to build a wheelset. Sadly the thing couldn't run the same tire at the rear but the front clears the 30mm rubber just fine.
For those curious the stem is a Factory Five Stem which can fit 31.8 bars.
