Peugeot Super Competition
Hi,
Hope everyone is well and staying safe during lockdown!
I bought a Peugeot Super Competition on eBay a few weeks ago and hoped you guys could help with some information and advice.
Here’s what I know so far:
Frame: Peugeot Super Competition with Reynolds 531 tubing and white front fork. Frame number Y101 2003
Bars: La Bonneville Iton 27190 CTA
Chainset: Unknown. The only marking I can see is Dotex on the plastic covers on the cranks and D0 Made in France on the inside of each crank
Drivechain: Shimano shifters and front/rear mechs, 7 speed rear cassette
Brakes: Exage Motion levers and I think matching brakes
Wheels: Campagnolo Berlin 36 front, Mavic T238 rear
The bike is roadworthy, with a few chips and marks on the paintwork and some outer cables need replacing. The brake hoods are missing but I’ve bought some of the same brakes with the hoods in place.
From what I can tell, some of the components have been replaced as I can’t see that they would match the age of the frame.
My plan is to service the bike, ultimately to sell on as part of my education in fixing up older bikes. But I’d love to know what you guys think, what age some of the bits are, and what you’d do to the bike to make it as desirable as possible.
It was only a cheap find on eBay, so don’t feel bad if you’re writing something mean!
Many thanks,
Kev

I'm certainly not a Peugeot expert, but I don't recall any non-lugged 531p framed "Prestige Peugeot" bikes.
I think someone stickered up a lower-level Peugeot.
First thing I would check - what's the seattube OD and the seatpost OD?

...not certain what that bicycle started out as, but here are a couple of Super Competition's for comparison reference.
You can note the many differences.........do you have any recourse through ebay ?

...also, whoever applied those Peugeot stickers was not very good at it. Note how low the downtube sticker is positioned as opposed to an original.

To be fair, it was advertised as a ‘Peugeot Vintage Racing Bike’ with no mention of Super Competition, it was just me who jumped to that conclusion! I didn’t realise it was so easy/common to re-sticker bikes. Oh well, all part of my education!

I would be concerned about this bike. I am not a Peugeot expert but I did work in a bike shop in the 80s that sold a lot of Peugeots. This is not like any Reynolds 531 super competition I've seen. I know a fair bit about the bikes. Peugeot did come out with lugless models but those were typically lower end bicycles. I've never seen a Reynolds 531 Peugeot without lugs. That said, the bike has forged drop outs so the tubing may be decent.
Where are you located? Was this a bike sold in Europe or are you in North America?
Peugeot catalogs are available online.

Thanks for that, it’s clear when they are side by side like that!

Thanks so much for your help on this. Seems I’ve gone from a hopeful restoration project to cheap runaround!
Oh well, all part of the learning process, and at least I’ll have fun cleaning it up.
Once again, the level of knowledge on this forum has astounded me!

Certainly it's unlikely that whoever stickered that bike was unaware of the counterfeit nature of it.
And certainly anyone selling bikes on ebay ought to have enough knowledge to prevent reselling something like that as a Peugeot without some clarification.
If someone profits from such a transaction, it's positive reinforcement for repetition. Which makes it harder in the old bike hobby for everyone.
Anyway, that's my feeling. I'm happy you feel you've learned something.
