Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm starting to miss having a modern road bike.

There's a Burley Wolf Creek in my size listed locally and I'm quite smitten. Even though it's red.

True Temper OX tubing with a carbon fork.

I need to get some newer pictures. It's noting too spectacular, and even this photo makes it look nicer than it is. I picked it up about a year ago. I ended up pulling the engine to solve some issues with leaks, etc. and that was a chore. It's a beater, but it's solid.

I seem to walk into a lot of overhead obstacles for a not-very-tall person and sailing seems to be particularly hard on the scalp, although I've never been whacked by a moving boom on anything larger than a Lazer, thank God. Fortunately, I virtually always have a hat on whenever I'm on a boat. This latest hit on the bike also put a big scrape on the top of my glabrous dome, right through the helmet and a 2-ply cap.

I wear earbuds constantly when doing any sort of work that doesn't require too much conscious thought. I have fixed some of the gaping holes in my education with audiobooks.

Threadless stem question. Is there a normal quill down in the headtube? Do these things get stuck like normal () stems do?

Threadless stems, for example

No and no. The stem clamp/spacer stack is first compressed downward with the steerer cap via a bolt to a star nut (for steel) or expansion plug sitting in the steerer tube. Then the stem clamp is tightened for the definitive fix. Nothing can get stuck except, I suppose, an expansion plug, but it's right there an inch away and clearly visible, so easy to dislodge and retrieve.

I know you'd love a modern bike. I just know it.

That works. Doubles nicely as a bike hauler.

And is there a specified tightness for that plug? I loosened it before I realized what was what. Yes, this is the first threadless stem I have ever touched

Yeah, there's a torque spec for those things. The one I have is 6-9 Nm, IIRC, but it also depends on the composition of the tube it's in. For CFRP, caution and friction paste are recommended.

The tightness is really based on preloading the bearings. It's pretty easy to do. YouTube if you need an explanation.

Next up are 13 Cannondale Backroads, followed by 12 Backroads Ti gravel bikes i wouldn't mind inheriting one of those. What does a bike mechanic make in your countries? He asked me to tell him what I want and I have no idea

For the headset cap, you need to tighten until there is no more slack between your head tube, fork steerer & stem. Apply front brakes while trying to move the bike forward and backward. If you feel something loose, tighten it a bit more and try it again until you reach the sweet spot. An over tighten headset cap will result in difficulties steering and will use your headset prematurely.

For the compression plug & stem bolts, specs should available on internet or written on the stem. Be careful not to over tighten the compression plug as well as it could expand your steerer tube to a point of cracking the CF. Same thing goes for the clamp bolts.

That would be too much money. It actually already has a late model block with a serpentine setup and centerbolt Vortec heads. It's about as fancy as it needs to be. It really needs some suspension tweaks and a carb tune, but it's otherwise a really solid frame and body (but dented) and mechanically sound. No A/C so it's strictly a winter/fair weather beater but it also means I have a truck so I can haul stuff easily if I need a huge mound of dirt or to move some big furniture.

The best part is that it's just fun to drive.

Depends on the material of the steerer tube. Metal tubes get star nuts. Carbon gets a compression plug.

Sticking points on a threadless-headset stem are pinch bolts and top cap bolt.

I suppose that a hat that's not tight to the noggin would give you a split second warning. I've been wearing a thin winter hat down there because it's ******g cold. It didn't give me sufficient warning, the bastard.

Pills & Ills update on The Occasionally Tingly Arm:

It hasn't really gotten better or worse, so I decided to visit my primary care physician. He says pinched nerve, he's referring me for some kind of physical therapy and has put me on a short term prescription for a type of steroid. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like said steroid will improve my watts.
