Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aluminium wheels vs Alu with carbon fairing

I am buying a new tri bike and my shop is giving me two options, regular aluminium wheels (Vision Team 30) or aluminium with carbon fairing wheels (Bontrager Aeolus comp 5 TLR) for an extra US550$.

What do you guys think? I don't have much experience with wheels. This bike will be mainly used for Triathlon races and I live in an area with not too much hills.

If it's for triathlon racing, then I'll assume it's relatively flat, no drafting and you'll be wanting aero gains. Go for the deepest wheels on offer. 😎

Yeah, you want the most aero (i.e. deepest…probably) you can get, so definitely the 50mm Aeolus.

Even if they are heavier they will be faster for anything except straight hill climbing
