Hey there sports fans! I have just located to your fine (and humid) state. I love to ride my mountain bike but don't know where to begin out here. So i am in need of your advice and knowledge!

First, i am living in the Sandy Springs area north of ATL. Where will i be able to ride my mountain bike? What trails are closest to me? What are the best trails? Weekend options? Are you guys able to ride trails daily or is it more of a weekend warrior type situation out here?

Secondly, what is the best kind of bike for the area? 29er? HT or full suspension? Cyclocross?

And finally, i really want to commute by bicycle. I know this depends on a lot of variables, but is there a remote possibility of making this happen or am i crazy to even consider it? ATL seems like a very car oriented city.

I lived in ATL and commuted by bike for several months before I moved to Chattanooga, TN. You're right, it is a very car oriented/non-cycle friendly city. The best advice I have is ride aggresivly and make sure that your bike is locked to anything and everything with as many chains and U-Locks you can carry.

Also, the very best mountian biking GA has to offer (in my opinion) is located an hour north at and arround Fort Mountain State Park. Lots of trails up in that area! As for the bike, buy something with two wheels and get on it.

SS is a good area to be with access to the better part of the state, the NW. Join SORBA (which'll also get you into IMBA), they gots all the info for ya, & they put on some fun race series....Carter's Lake & Ft Mountain were my 2 faves there.

Lotsa options a short drive away for weekend pedals.

Given the lack of response to my thread, i am afraid that the cycle scene out here is less than stellar. Or maybe everyone is too busy riding to comment (which would mean busy trails). Or maybe people in GA just don't know how to use those new fangled, complicated, techy compewdurrs? And i don't know which is worse. Hard telling, not knowing i guess. But i aim to find out soon!

Either way, it's so hot and humid here. My blood is too thick for this kind of weather. See you out on the trails. Or maybe not. Ride safe, sports fans!

I live in Chattanooga, there are some good trails up here. I haven't riden any North GA trails yet. I plan on riding some this year. If you head up this way let me know and I will join you for some trail riding.
