Giant holes in carbon rim?

I took a closer look at a pair of used carbon wheels i bought from a guy, who bought it from a guy, 2 months ago, and noticed that underneath the rim tape, there are two large holes drilled into them. the location of the holes are each around 120 degrees away from the valve stem, so not close to each other at all. the rim by default does not have spoke holes, so I'm assuming that these were drilled in order to easily replace spokes at those locations. That said, should I be worried about this? I mean, the wheel feels solid, except the rear braking sucks sometimes, and that's not uncommon with older wheels.

Possibly a way to get the spoke nipples inside the rim. Roger

This is a great option, allowing you to install 3 valve stems, and thus keep the wheel balanced, as well as greatly aiding the inflation process.

Who said innovation in cycling was dead?

Now we just need to wait for the 3-headed pump technology to catch up.

Maybe it is for three-chambered tubes, so that if you get a puncture, you can keep riding.

Each hole removes a part of a gram in weight, you did buy that for what little it weighs, right?

That doesn't appear to be a tubeless profile, so I'm not sure if there is any advantage of not having nipple holes.

And, if there were no spoke holes, there would be no reason to have rim tape.

It seems a bit odd, but appears to be more of an annoyance than an issue.

Weight will be increased because without holes, there would be no need for rim tape.

Those holes are very fashionable for pseudo-racers.

Holes fill up with air. Air has weight. Duh. #roadielogic

I'm still wondering how he could tell what brand the holes are, though.

You've been eating too many doughnuts... with holes, without holes, .... or simply just doughnut holes.

yoeleo has a line of wheels that doesn't have nipple holes. it's supposed to improve the rim's rigidity. not many wheel brands do this.
