Squeaking noise when pedaling backwards.
First of all, hello! I bought a 2006 Giant OCR3 back in January and yesterday and today were the first long rides I've done on it. I noticed a squeaking noise when pedaling backward and also when shifting (not every time). What could be causing this?

Besides all the usual (chain, cable entry and exit points, brake and der pivots and spring tab ends) external lube points being cleaned and lubed check the rear der pulley bushings (and how worn the upper one is besides their getting lubed). Also check for any "rubber" seals at the axle/hub shell interface. Do you ride Speedplay X pedals? If you walk the bike backwards do you hear the noise? Is the noise rhythmic with the spin of the wheels? Andy

In the shop the gold standard in searching for a noise is being able to finally reproduce the right forces on the bike to consistently create the noise. Then you can play with the method to fix. Keep trying to isolute the movements. To check the seemingly unrelated bits (like seatpost and saddle clampings) because they can sometimes surprise you. And having the rest of the bike in good working order is always good.
Logic might say the reduction of pedal pressure, the relaxing of chain tension, the rear hub's ratchet/pawls moving with the relaxed pressure have something to do with the noise. But other things change with relaxing pedal pressures like weight on the seat or bars, some will only coast with the same pedal down, Rim joints can have a plug inside that can come loose and be heard "sometimes".
BTW I hope the shifter pods have been kept lubed and still work well. Andy

Any number of things could be causing the squeak, but, since you didn't mention that you'd lubricated the chain since buying the bike: if you haven't already done so, lubricate the chain. If that doesn't help, move on to lubricating other moving parts as detailed in the posts above.

Is your shoe rubbing against the crank causing the squeak?
