This is why you don't leave bikes outside

I am refurbishing/rebuilding an old Trek Ascent mtb for a friend. It's got rust in certain spots and I think that rust has gotten inside of it (I'll have to soak in Evaporust, once I remove the paint.) That isn't the worst part of it though. I wanted to keep the fork, however it rusted on, so I had to cut it off with an angle grinder. That's isn't even a big deal, but it's the principle. Make sure everything is properly greased and oiled, to prevent parts from seizing on. For the love of God, don't leave animals and bicycles outside!

(I am being part serious and part sarcastic, don't mind me.)

This kind of thing is why I normally do not work on others bikes. One of my neighbors flagged me down a couple of weeks ago to ask if I could take a look at his bike to see if I could fix whatever was wrong. I went and looked at if that afternoon. It was a gas pipe bike from the 70's that I think had all original parts on it, chain, tires, cables, etc. I think it had not been lubed/greased or cleaned since the day it was new. I took a look at it and told him I could not help with it.

Prolly Diamondback.

Either way, it’s true they should not be left out in the weather.

I guess I'm lucky. Where I live, a bike left outside would be stolen right away and be 'off to a new home' !

Why would you cut the fork and not the stem if you wanted to save the fork?

I wanted to save the fork, however the fork was completely seized on. I sprayed it with JB Blaster, heated it with a heating and took a pipe wrench too it, and it wouldn't come off. I was forced to cut it off. The stem came off just fine.

I guess I'm not seeing where a fork "seizes" in a headtube. It only sits on the bearings. Threadless steerer the stem holds it in and on a threaded steerer cut the locknut and upper race.

It's not a threadless fork. It seized on the lock nut.

In that case you cut or drill then split the locknut rather than cut the steerer tube.

I just saw this on a bike that sat outside all winter; the upper and lower headset bearings rusted solid with the headset cups and cones. I had to pound everything out with a large hammer.

The cups came out without a problem...rust is a helluva drug.
