I would not call that a promising sign. I guess a good thing comes of the odd photo choices.

Specialized road bike

1200 for a clapped out specialized.

'Rare Rare bike. The only markings on the frame is "IREC-RIVE".'

obviously a prototype (and thus worth $$$) for the common place "DIRECT DRIVE" and not just some rubbed off lettering.

If constructed properly they should be strong enough to ride. There is a place in Portland that makes ridable wooden bikes for a pretty penny.

My guess is the seller went cheap with the bottom bracket, perhaps wheel bolts, and headset.

His laminated wood could be very strong, although he is probably using plywood rather than laminating individual layers. However, I'm not convinced that mounting bearing cups directly into wood would be strong enough. I think most wood and bamboo bikes have a metal head tube, bottom bracket tube, steer tube, and dropouts.

A couple of the bikes apparently only have a half a handlebar. So they're either designed for war vets... or as wall hangers.

Prices of $120 to $300 seem almost lower than I would expect for the level of custom work.

The seller doesn't seem to think so. I emailed him, saying: "I assume it said "DIRECT DIVE" before a couple of the letters wore off?"

his response: "I don't think so,it does have prototype Campy on it. The brakes &shifter."

Front fork backwards. I think what is more important for safety than those lights is to have the fork face the right direction.

I was recently talking to a bike shop owner about walmart and other big store bikes. He thinks the reason so many of their bikes have backward forks is because when the employees pull the new bikes from the box the forks are usually turned around to fit in the box better. May the worker putting the bike together thinks thats the way its suppose to go. If so, they shouldn't be building bikes.

Sure does. That's a common place for those dropouts to fail. Not hard to fix, but it would ruin the chrome. "Caveat emptor," as they say.

Won't rust and the fork is bent!

I'm not sure it is easy to bend wood.

But, that could be a unique problem.

Get your bike wet, and it warps

Recently reduced to an affordable $319.20.

"Campagnolo SuperLeggeri SL Road quill Pedals that have been modified. These have had the cages removed and homemade alloy cages with reflectors installed. These are really cool and very nicely done, the bolt holes are recessed nicely and the tops of the cages have grooves to give some traction"

Those "Campy" pedals look pretty ugly, but it would be a good mod for a pedal with a badly damaged cage.
