Riding from San Diego to Yucaipa... Best route past Temecula?

This is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30645297 I have never ridden in any area past Temecula before. So, I'm somewhat lost on what is the best route (safest, road conditions) to use to get to my destination. The mapping link is the route I found. . If you have any suggestions on alternative routes, please let me know. I don't plan to climb the mountain until the following day. :-)I'm also going back from this location to Valley Center, near Hellhole Canyon, 11 days later. Thanks for your adviceDave

route looks okay. gonna be hot. you could angle over to winchester rd/hwy 79 which has a pretty wide shoulder for much of the route you'd be riding
but you'd hafta contend with the significant grade/hill/wind from gilman springs rd nearly the entire way to the 10 fwy. difficult. i would recommend
the 79/winchester corridor on the way back tho to take advantage of that long downhill into the hemet area.

When I lived in Yucaipa this is how the local club would route the rides.

i do think you're better off taking the rainbow canyon rd/rice canyon/couser canyon/lilac rd option back into
valley center on the way back vs the pechanga pkwy/pala rd/lilac rd (unpaved part). you could follow the 15 fwy corridor a little more
for more support if it's super hot. will still be fairly lumpy tho. the less time you spend cycling east west on hwy 76 between
harrah's casino and the 15 fwy, the better. you could also take sage rd-stiff climb-(or wilson valley rd to the 371, then east/left to the 79
past warner springs and the eastern end of palomar mtn) to the 79 and head east for approx 5 miles to aguanga, then to warner spring and
then to the 76 and west to valley center rd/harrah's area. the 79 carries a lot of traffic tho. i still like rainbow cyn/rice cyn/couser cyn/lilac rd
route the best to return to valley center for shade and lack of traffic. stock up/resupply in temecula. arguably the hardest route back.
arguably the easiest route back. any route back to valley center past temecula will involve nearly 3,000 of climbing.

Route Modified

ooga-booga: I've modified my route to include part of 76, to where it meets up with Domenicati. After that road, 76 narrows.
I haven't done my Valley Center part... yet. I'm waiting on my friend to send his address. All I can say is that it borders Hellhole Canyon. He also lives off of a dirt road (maybe, Santee rd?) I'll be putting up a route soon enough.

tunavic: thanks for the link. Hopefully, some of it mirrors my route or makes a better alternative than what I came up with on my routes.

Route: Yucaipa to Valley Center

I now have my route from Yucaipa to Valley Center up and live.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30511844

Comments:
I'm not fond of the area around Menifee and Nuevo, so I tried my best with google maps to find suitable roads to ride on. The bike infrastructure in Riverside County seems to be lacking

Also, my initial route has changed to put me through Hemet, Cherry Valley, Beaumont, and Calmesa, going through Gilman Hot Springs

Be extra extra cautious on the Domenigoni Pkwy section.

Freeway speeds + driven by our area's numerous and less than attentive drivers.

looks good. just make sure you’ve got enough water/supplies to get you through the last 20 miles (nearly all your climbing) from temecula to valley center. i don’t think there’s any convenience stores or the like along that last leg so stock up in temecula.

Experience

Thanks for the quick reply, ooga booga. I've been the exact opposite way on these roads before, and know of the lack of traffic. At least Rice Cyn is downhill for the most part :-) Only part I haven't done is W. Lilac. Thanks for suggesting it. I had initially had me going on 76, and through some other well traveled roads, with no shoulder. I switched it on your suggestion Only diff is about 1,000' less of climbing compared to Couser/Rice/Rainbow No biggie. Mileage was the same. I'll know to stock in Temecula, and plan to.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I've not ridden that road before, and will be using it in both directions., Probably not much different than riding on the side of CA-67 from Lakeside up to above Poway.

the less you're on hwy 76 between the 15 fwy and harrah's rincon casino, the better. road carries a lot of traffic these days and shoulders are...what shoulders?
rice canyon and couser canyon intersect with hwy 76 and you're on hwy 76 for a few dozen yards. that's it. couser canyon is one of the prettier roads in sd county.

lilac rd is a handy connector to a few roads. it looks like you can take it all the way to/from pala/valley center. you can, but the last two northern miles has a steep grade
(steeper than anything on couser) along with approx 1.5 of dirt just south of pala/hwy 76. worth doing at some point but i wouldn't recommend it for the first time at the
end of a long day. the nearby n/s connecting road of pala temecula rd is a quick way in/out of temecula...the road carries a lot of traffic and there isn't much shoulder for most of it.
comparatively, very few cars use rice canyon/couser canyon.

domenigioni pkwy is wide with wide shoulders and good sightlines. as mentioned, high speed with a decent amount of traffic. perfect and likely place for drivers to pay all their bills
online from their phone for the month while motoring along at 68 mph. if you can ride hwy 67 between ramona and lakeside, you'll be fine.

have a great ride!

How it went... Northern Route

Northern route: Home to Yucaipa by way of Temecula and Hemit, Cherry Valley, and Beaumont, 114.9 miles, 10 hours with stops.

IT PAYS TO LEAVE EARLY TO AVOID BEING EXPOSED TO A LOT OF HEAT.
Alarm went off at 2:30 a.m. .
Out the door at 3:15 a.m.
It's dark. Counted 4 cars on Kearny Villa North. Went through the foot and bike trails with no issues (along 15, continuing down Cara Knott bridge, where I've seen some shady activity in the past) Sesame Donuts stop in Carmel Valley was 20 minutes, mile 20. Daylight came at Escondido.about the time that I hit the I-15 portion of the ride. Able to descend Champagne without any issues because there's some new patchwork that's smoother than the rest of the garbage road that they have not done anything to, probably 20 years. It's my least favorite part of the trip.

Traffic incident at 76th and old 395. They closed the freeway off at 76 until the next exit because of a motorcycle fatality. They piled all of the traffic off of I-15 onto Old 395 so I saw a lot of cars today. I also passed a lot of them. I think one motorist swore at me as I rode by. Rainbow Valley no issues. Descent into Temecula is a bit rough.

Del Taco stop at Mile 60 in Temecula, 20 minutes., Hit a side road onto Margarita, which has nice bike lanes from one end to the other.
Stopped at Jax Bike Shop, where they were just getting ready to do a group ride and they had food out and it was offered to me so of course, I'm going to take the bait. They open at 10, and had my tires checked. seems like a nice shop.

Heading out of Murrieta, I took Winchester most of the way up towards Hemet and it wasn't bad wide shoulder for the most part relatively recent road work, made the right pleasant It's a steady incline all the way up to Diamond Lake where I made a right, onto Domengoni, which has a wider lane for a bike. Traffic is going fast, and no issues.

SBUX stop in Hemet, mile 90. Needed a slight break before I tackled Gilman Hot Springs. Getting to the grade on 76 was an adventure with speeding cars at, or above 50 miles an hour with no shoulder for about 3 miles... that was probably the most harrowing part of the trip, doubt I'll take that way again, By the time I hit the grade, I had a wide bike lane with almost freeway type speed going by me. It was that way until I headed off towards Beaumont and Cherry Valley, to the left. Cherry Valley way is a bit rough, as I descend towards I-10 and Calimesa, where I did my small amount of food shopping, before heading towards my Airbnb location for the next couple of nights, in Yucaipa.

Overall the ride went fine no incidents no flats I just put on new tires and tubes, new chain, and chainrings (thanks Bernard!). Elevation seems to be a bit much for what I felt like I did today (7300' for 114.9 miles) . The mountain awaits on Monday.
Carrying a good amount of items for the annual retreat that I'm going to, so is weighed down somewhat had to take it easy so I wouldn't flame out. Almost in touring mode.

Mountain Climb from Yucaipa to up to past Angelus Oaks

It's just like most mountain roads. Wider shoulders till the hairpins, then you have to take the lane.. Up and downs from past Angelus Oaks to near the campground at 5700-5900' Steeper climb near the end. Climbing most mountains puts me in my meditation zone.....

South from the campground to Valley Center

SOUTHERN ROUTE.... Barton Flats (appx) to Valley Center, 110 miles, 5000' of ascension.

There's a reason I get up early to ride.... This one was def harder than the ride up.. Maybe it was that 10 day layoff.... I did not ride during the event, but got ideas from a car trip I took around Big Bear Lake... Planning to ride that route in 2020 when I return.

Alarm went off at 515

Headed out of camp at 0630.

Downhill (about 15miles of going 30+) was rough on my shoulders and neck, which made the rest of the ride not very comfortable. I managed :-) I'm not used to bombing down mountains. Looking for ideas on to better bomb down mountains... still hit nearly 40 in many portions of the descent (about 5000')

Short stop in a Yucaipa parking lot, just south of the main boulevard, mile 26. There's a Vons, but it's across the street. In hindsight, it probably would've been worth a short stop, because I was feeling the affects of the long bomb down the mountain.

Oak Glen turns into Oak Cyn south of the 10. It's a bit of a country road, heading towards Timoteo Cyn and Moonlight Rim (the west side of Lake Perris) was much more calming than going on the flat part of CA-79 (before the 1000' of climbing w/wider bike lanes right before you get to the serious climbing), I can see why the local groups choose that route.

Redlands rd (2 miles of 600'climbing) isn't bad till you pass CA-60. It gets better at its end near the entrance of Perris Lake. I took the road into the preserve. Hardly any cars.. Just how I like it. It's starting to get warm.... duh. Steep climb into Perris Lake preserve.

Signal did not trip off of Ramona Hwy when making a left onto Evans, which turned out to be a decent, smooth (watch the glass particles) road. That's Riverside county in a nutshell... no bike infrastructure to speak of. Nuevo and Menifee rds? Hmmm. both are narrow straightaways that didn't leave room for a bike to ride on. Most streets either west or east are packed dirt, so not many options. Will check if there are alternatives for the next time I do this trip. At least I could get off of Menifee rd near the end and go through a newer development near Domengoni Pkwy. (Heritage Lake, with a couple of parks where you could take a pee break (which I did for appx <10min) at mile 55.

Winchester was fun... not. Headwinds hit me right at the start. Gusts up to 20. I was cursing the wind at times. Made my first longer stop in Dutch Village (Benson rd) at mile 73. Too long. I had made a few short stops, but nothing where I sat and rested. A short jaunt brought me over to Jax cycles, without having to do any more traveling on Winchester (which is bad for bikes anyway at that point) [residential neighborhoods in Murrita Hot Springs] Ended up at the start of Margarita, which is one of the few good roads for bikes in Temecula. Continued through old downtown, before getting on Temecula hwy (I'd choose the whole of Margarita rd all the way to Jeridiah, making a right to the shopping center off of Temecula Hwy & Pechanga) . However, had to get another suntan lotion, because my other one dropped out, probably on the mountain.

it was getting pretty hot about that time... uh oh. filled up both water bottles, been drinking like a fish..... but still dehydrated.... :-(

Climbs up to Rainbow, a descent down Rice Cyn (horrible downhill, pothole infested, road) and a tough ascent up Couser Cyn (almost 4 miles worth in 90 degrees and where I tripped mile 100) I had to stop once for about 40 seconds near the top... (I don't like to do that) After the mile descent down Couser, more uphill greeted me, making a right on Lilac, which turned into W. LIlac, and into Valley Center, where I met up with some friends for a needed hot tub break. Overall, this ride was tougher than my ride up, probably because of the following:"

* later start, exposed me to the heat of the day, and in Menifee, Temecula,, it was 90+

* really thought I drank a lot of water... but the telling tale was ummmm you know where.. Amber color.....

* not taking a break earlier in the ride... my first "lunch stop" was at mile 73 at a Del Taco.. I could not find much food stops from Perris Lake, through Nuevo, or Menifee, the top of Winchester. I did want to stop earlier but carried on.

* back to back to back climbs in 90+ temps. I wasn't doing that well in Couser Cyn... that's a pretty hard climb when you've ridden 100 miles already.

I was going to complete the ride after 2 nights with my friends, but they both had things to do in SD, so I hitched a ride with one of them back home, then did a hillfest on the day I was going to ride back home in Tierrasanta.

Anyway, that's it in a nutshell. Hope it helps someone :-)
