Thanks to this forum, I took my wife bike shopping instead of surprising her for Christmas. The style she likes the best is the hybrid and the top two bikes are the Trek Verse 2 (at a LBS) and the Diamondback Vital 2 (would order from corporate site). Now looking at the price tag, there is quite a difference, with the Trek Verse 2 being $475 and the Diamondback Vital 2 being $260 (plus $50 assembly at the LBS).

Now for a complete newbie, is the Trek Verse 2 worth the additional $165? Looking at components, both seem to have the lowest end, but I expected this for the price.

Trek Verse 2 (for example):

Diamondback Vital 2:
