The quest for a 14-28 8spd cassette

These appear to be unobtanium. Not really new news but checking in to see if anybody has successfully cobbled together such a beast using readily available parts? Wanting for Shimano HG.

plonz I don't know if this works for you but 8-speed 11-28 is pretty readily available.

I don't think that Shimano ever offered a 14T HG outer cog for 8 speed, though they did for 7 speed, on 14-32T ATB cassettes. The spacing to the outer cog is the least critical and the very small difference should be capable of being handled by the Centeron pulley float. So, you should be able to cobble something together, if you can find the 14T.

Pretty sure Shimano made a 14-25 Sora 9 speed cassette. Add a 28, drop two of the lower intermediate gears and use your own 8 speed spacers.
I custom make all my cassettes and find it OK to mix 7-8-9-10 speed cogs as long as the correct spacers are used.

Get an 11 speed and just remember never to use the upper 3

Im not any help here but i do understand. I make all my cassettes from scratch. 12 is the biggest starter i can usually find. Id be thrilled to find 13s.

Shimano HG50 8 sp comes in 13-26. Don't know if individual 1st position cogs are available -- probably not. Another solution is Miche cassettes and cogs for Shimano hubs. Miche Primato 8 speed Shimano compatible cassettes come in 14 - 23, and other configurations. Miche cogs are available individually but don't know how available. Looks like they are available from an Italian ebay seller "ridewell" including 14t 1st position for 8/9 speed. Including shipping about 30 euro.

Here's a Shimano 13t 9 speed 1st position sprocket for $14.

Individual Miche cogs seem to be a little harder to come by than they were the last time I checked.

Might I humbly suggest shrinking your chainrings by about 8% instead? That would essentially turn a 13-26 into a 14-28.

Thanks all. I have a variety of 8spd cassette and chainring combos already. I have a specific application where I’d like to keep 52/39 upfront, a 28 in back and still use a short cage. Looking for a more narrow progression than what a 12 or 13 gets me. My ideal would be 14,15,16,17,19,21,24,28.

I’m going to look at rccardr ’s recommendation a little further and see what possibilities might exist.
