Leaked Photo of 2020 Trek Domane?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think you got confused because he used 'except' rather than 'accept'. I believe he meant to say "it will accept 32c with fenders" and since fenders usually reduce the size of tire you can put on, the reasonable deduction is it can fit larger than 32c without fenders.

Also one can go here: https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/domane/ to see the relevant pieces of information such as:
and there’s more than enough clearance to run wide rubber (up to 38c) that rolls fastest over rough terrain.
and
The frame has clearance for tires up to 38c and every model is equipped with disc brakes that keep you riding confidently even in the rough.

Funny thing, language.

New Domane will accept 700x35c tires with fenders.

I find this very annoying.

IsoSpeed on the Domane's use to only be on the rear, then on a good few models, you could get it front and rear and now you get it on the front only, unless you spring for the much more expensive models.

It is on the rear for all models but only adjustable on the SLR.
Personally I don't think that is a big deal as I have never felt the need or desire to adjust the rear isospeed on my SL6.

They all have it on the rear. It's just the old non-adjustable version on the SL, only the SLR has the new version.

Why wouldn't Trek instead just extend the Checkpoint line and provide higher spec options in that lineup?

Product line differentiation.

The Checkpoint can clear massive tires, has lots of mounting points and is their "true" gravel bike.

The Domane sits with their triumvirate of "road" bikes: aero, climber and endurance; it's obviously no accident that these three bikes have naming anagrams (Madone, Emonda and Domane, respectively).

I can't believe I've never noticed that until now.

As someone who does a good mix of road riding and light gravel on mostly flat terrain, the new Domane could be a true "quiver killer" for me.

I was very close to choosing the Checkpoint SL5, but had a few minor issues with it. I didn't like the lack of balance between front and rear compliance, with the lack of front IsoSpeed and the supposedly squishier rear IsoSpeed. Trek claimed the larger tire volume made up for the stiffer front end, but I wanted to use it as a road bike too with a second wheel set and narrower tires, which would make the imbalance more pronounced.

I always liked the Domane better as a sleeker, faster road bike, but I was uncomfortable with the limited tire size for all of the crushed gravel paths around here. Now the ability of the 2020 Domane to accept 38c unlocks a lot of good gravel tire options. Throw in all of the other goodies on this thing (front IsoSpeed, threaded bottom bracket, tool compartment, kinda aero, etc), and it will be hard to avoid purchasing one. I just hope the SL5 doesn't come in at like $3,500 or something... It has always been under $3k.

As has been pointed out, rear Iso will be available on all new Domane models, it's just that the adjustable rear Iso (located on the bottom of the top tube) is only available on the SLR.

As far as the old Domane models, I can understand the fragmentation as it was developmental over a period of a few generations. The original, non-adjustable seat tube IsoSpeed was first. Front Iso was developed and added to the mix. Adjustable seat tube rear Iso was developed and then added to the new, top end models.

But yeah, going back to the non-adjustable seat tube method on these brand new SL bikes seems wrong; an intentional effort to dumb it down so as to not steal sales of the more expensive model.

Yeah, without the new rear Iso, I would hope that they'd keep the pricing the same or just marginally higher. Over $3k will be a fail.

Regardless, for me, the new SL just isn't worth the upgrade from my 2018 SL. At Domane SLR price tags, rather replace my current Domane, I'd get a Madone SL to add to the garage.

Yeah, certainly no compelling reason to upgrade from a 2-year-old bike! If you feel like taking that thing on gravel and it's a disc brake model, it will take 35's without much trouble (the "Domane Gravel" was the same frame with 35's on it, even though they only officially claim 32mm as the max). It's a very versatile ride!

Yup. I actually have a Grvl model, though I usually keep 30mm tires on it and have a dedicated gravel bike.

Bikerumor has the various price levels. They claim the SL5 will be $2,899. Weight TBD, but the SL6 is listed as 20.12 lbs (usually Trek quotes weights for 56 cm size).

https://bikerumor.com/2019/07/25/new...ire-clearance/

Is that SL5 in the photo blue or purple? I am partially color blind. I think there is also a red version.

This one?

It looks kinda two-tone to me - gray/blue matte with a streak of dark blue metallic running along the TT and seat stays. Really handsome, I think.

Yes, that one.

Cool. Not purple.

After watching a couple video reviews, I certainly wouldn't be upset if my Domane developed an incurable BB problem and needed to be replaced under warranty by a 2020. The lines look a little more sporty overall and a couple of the colorways are pretty cool. I *love* the white with striped blue logos, but I suspect that's an SL-only colorway.

Yeah, I was just looking through it. I like that they're doing the base model (SL5) in that purple metallic flake for no upcharge. I suspect that that's because they did away with the women's specific geo, but I'd still rock it.
