Why are roadies going 1x11 or 1x12?

Did we ever find out why roadies are going 1x11 or 1x12? I haven't spotted a roadie with those setups in my area yet.

I'd rate IndyFabz a 8.8/10 and noodle soup a 9.5/10. Applaud those two for putting themselves out there. Would of done the same but the bike did not fit and had to sell, sigh.

Why not shift in front and stand the slightly higher 40-17 or sit for the slightly lower 40-19? Take advantage of the two tooth gaps? Ride a near straight (and efficient) chain? Be able to wear down the guys around you in big gap cassettes because you can do subtle gear changes every time the road levels out a touch?
Standing isn't about going faster for energy expended. You expend more. You use less of your muscle reserves but at higher heartrate, breathing, calorie and blood sugar loss. I'm a born climber who loves to stand. I can do it all day. But I don't pretend it is more efficient. Spent too much time monitoring speed, cadence and heartrate.

But you're not who has to find me attractive, and I'm happy.

Non omnino gravis
52/26 @ 90rpm = ~14.2mph
40/19 @ 90rpm = ~14.9mph
Now if you mean 52/26 vs. 40/26, then yeah-- the latter is about 3mph slower. That's why the bike has two shifters.

Roadies are going 1x because they see MTBrs running 1x so they think this is an awesome setup... when in reality roadies are no more than a bunch of sissy-monkey-see-monkey-do-girliemen.

At what point are the bike companies going to run into space problems in the rear triangle area? Have they already reached that point? That would be the main reason I see for moving back to more rings in front and less cogs in back.

I read your three things and all I can think about is where were you when normal gearing was a 14 - 24 five-speed freewheel and 42 - 52 chain rings? 1 x whatever is such an incredible improvement over what I grew up with. Right now I am working with a frame builder for a custom stainless steel frame. My drive train will be a 1 x 8!! The gearing on this type of setup is really all that is needed unless . . . . If you are a pro rider than maybe, and just maybe, you need a double chain ring up front. If you are not a pro rider than you need to take a critical look at the gear inches for each shift and adjust accordingly for where you will ride. I can ride for many hundreds of kilometers from my home and not need anything more than what I have designed with my 1 x 8.

Here you go! I'm in the back in yellow in the group pic. Hope you get a bike soon, never too late to turn things around!

I took a quick glance at the Giant website here in Canada. Not 1 of the 6 lines of road bikes has a single chainring up front. And they are the largest manufacturer of bicycles. Would somebody please tell them they are doing it wrong!

I think we have Aqua Blue Sport and 3T to thank for setting back mass 1x adoption by approximately five years or so (and also the guys at Shimano/Campagnolo/SRAM who are still figuring out how to make a 1x drivetrain more expensive than one with a front derailleur)
