FS: Frejus "Tour de France" c. 1960s

Hello folks,

You can see a thread about the rebuilding of this Frejus below. Please refer to the thread for all of the details and photos. The frame measurements are 23.5" from center-to-top with a 22.5" top tube (c-c).

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...-c-1964-a.html

The price is $400 shipped within the Continental United States (lower 48) or $300 for local pickup in the Fresno/Visalia area.

Cheers!

-Gregory

Hi Don,

It's just about the same as my Raleigh Super Course, which I believe weighs right around 28 lbs. I don't have anything better than a floor scale to use at the moment - I can only say with confidence that it's more than 25 lbs and less than 30 lbs.

It rides wonderfully. I've taken it out a couple of times for as long as 80 miles. I can stay in the saddle all day and I can also sprint and easily keep up 25 mph for two or three miles on end. The cables only have three hundred miles on them or so and will probably need minor tweaking once more as I only adjusted them once since putting them all on fresh last year.

Cheers!

and the wheel/tire size is something easily dealt with when it's new tire and tube time? i'm somewhat "illiterate" on vintage bikes like this one ... i had an Austro Damier Vent Noir back when i was stationed in New Hampshire in the 70's and i'm restoring a Technium right now, so i know my way around the tool box and fixing my bikes, but things like thread sizes for a bike like this are out of my experience! just a few more questions if you don't mind.. the freewheel type and threading, the rear derailleur and bottom bracket threading. thank for your time!

There are a lot of 27" tires on the market, though they aren't typically available in as high of quality as 700c tires, which is the current standard. They work great but you won't find a lot of width and tread options, and none of them are meant to be super lightweight. They're meant to put on old bicycles to keep them on the road.

A regular 700c tube is close enough to the same size that it works for both 700c/27" - literally just a few millimeters difference in total circumference.

Let me get back to you within a day or two on the last questions/details. I would need to check the bicycle out in person and I'm at work on break just now. Cheers!

sorry to bother you at work! east coast/west coast.. the main thing i wanted to make sure i'm not stuck with is finding the usual maintenance parts, and didn't want to have bottom bracket and headset bearings or a freewheel that was some weird size only manufactured on february 31st while jupiter was aligned with a 1963 VW beetle traveling south of rome at 120 kph on the wrong side of the road.. thus i'd never find those bearings or parts! (or maybe i would! life can be strange sometimes!) i'll spend some time on the other post you have here about this bike, but right now i'm pretty sure i want to pull the trigger.

Oh, no worries! When I'm trying to sell things that's work too, and I am fine spending my breaks hashing out details!

This Frejus is definitely made with typical equipment for its era. It's from the beginning of the "bike boom" and was meant to be sold on the US market. It's almost certainly regular Italian threading on the BB but I can find out once I see the manufacturer. The freewheel is more modern than the bike I believe, and should also be standard issue where threads are concerned. My experience with older Campagnolo headsets is that the bearings are just slightly different size than the British or Japanese ones I've dealt with in the past, but also standard affair - there are still thousands of old Italian bikes that use these basic measurements, some reserved for Italian stuff and others universal or nearly so.

I'll reply again once I have the exact manufacturer specs for the BB and freewheel, but I'm pretty sure my knowledge of the threading and bearings won't become more sufficient than that!

Gatorskins and Pasella's both come in 27 in. and both are very good tires. Plenty of other replacements as well.

I haven't personally removed the crank arms, but was told by the seller that the bicycle had recently been overhauled (that was almost two years ago). The bottom bracket bearings run very smoothly so I can only assume that the grease is rather fresh, which would mean that the crank arms have been removed.

I am currently in the office 12-15 hours per day, and need to prioritize walking my dog during the one hour of daylight that I have free in the morning. I may not be able to pull the Frejus out to check the bottom bracket and freewheel manufacturers until Sunday.

Thanks.

There should be a serial number on the seat stay. I am guessing - based on what you said about age it is 10xxxx. Can you see that number?

The details for that are all in the thread I originally posted about the bicycle, which is linked in the first post. The number is 100622 and is stamped on the seat tube on the non-drive side.

Free bump for you because I swear this is the exact bike I sold at least 7 years ago. It is a very nice bike! Very fast feeling. I didn’t know at the time about bike sizing and it’s not my size. But whoever does buy it will be surprised at how well it rides.

Thanks for the bump all that time ago, Tulok!

Part of this Frejus has sold via eBay! I'll be dismantling it and considering how best to advertise the rest. Cheers!
