Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any word on when these become available in the U.S.?

They've been announced with great fanfare. They dominate their companies' respective websites. Does anyone know when these products are supposed to be available in the U.S.:

- Shimano Ultegra Di2 8070 (disc) groupset?
- BMC TeamMachine SLR01 Disc?
- Garmin Vector 3

Answer #1 - Competitive Cyclist says they expect to have the 8070 groupset in October 2017.

Still waiting for an answer from my LBS for the 2018 BMC.

Update#2 . . . LBS says . . .

Shimano 8070 groupset should be available late October to mid-November 2017.

2018 BMC Teammachine SLR01 Disc frameset is available NOW. Complete bikes equipped with Ultegra Di2? Still TBD.

What's the frameset going for?

I think suggested retail is just shy of $4500. Always negotiable, of course.

The $4,500 MSRP is for the "module." That's the frameset, plus stem, 3T Ergonova bar, bar tape, seatpost, fizik saddle, computer/camera mount, etc. It's essentially the whole bike less the wheels, water bottle cages, and groupset.

UPDATE #3: Not unexpected . . . Shimano now says MOST of my 8070 groupset will be ready for delivery in late September. But the REST of the groupset? December. (My money says February of next year, but Shimano isn't saying it . . . yet.)

Did you ever try to build up a bike using 80% of the groupset?

I've been waiting on the release of the new Ultegra R8050 di2 derailleurs slated for an early August release. I keep seeing release dates getting pushed back now as late as November on some retail sites. I called Shimano North America yesterday and spoke with a gentleman who said it should be released mid September. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hopefully your 8070 will follow suit.

My hope is that they will be released overseas and I'll be able to get them before the mid September US release. Maybe not? Kind of stinks because I have the new R8000 brakes along with the R8000 Crank on the bike and I'm in the mood to spend money on the bike but can't get what I want.

Yet another update . . . and let's add another long-announced, but not yet available product.

Shimano Ultegra Di2 Disc R8070 Groupset? We're pushing through yet another projected availability date and there's no sign of an end to the wait. Perhaps the February estimate was right. My frameset has been waiting at the LBS since early August. (At least I haven't paid for it yet.) Shimano keeps pushing back the availability date by a month or two each time.

But what about the Garmin Vector 3 power meter? Another long-announced product with no availability in sight. While Shimano is pushing back delivery dates on the R8070 a month at a time, Garmin is pushing their dates back by a couple weeks at a time. And a few online retailers are taking pre-orders. Maybe that means Garmin will make it to the market first? We will see.

Does anyone have any news on when these products will see the light of day? (These companies are too well established to be in the vaporware business . . . aren't they?)

UPDATE on the Shimano Di2 R8070: LBS says everything EXCEPT the GS rear derailleur will be delivered on October 26! If it happens, I will build the bike using a 6870 GS rear derailleur so that I can ride between now and the time the new derailleur arrives. ETA on the new GS derailleur is . . . December!

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: October 26 came and went. Shimano Di2 R8070's ETA is again indeterminate. I appreciate that Shimano, unlike that other manufacturer whose name starts with "S," doesn't release product until they get it right, but this is getting ridiculous.

Perhaps updating long-established products (6870) is just a lot more challenging than it would seem.

I was thinking the same thing about revising existing products but I don’t really know what’s going to be different about it. I really like my 6870 so it would need to be major for me to go that direction. Does it have the buttons on the hoods for Use with Garmin devices, or is that a Dura Ace thing?

R8070 will allegedly have the concealed buttons in the hoods, a 34T cassette capacity, and the designed-for-the-road disc brakes. The shapes of all the components are different, too.

UPDATE:

SHIMANO R8070 - Yesterday, the "official" Shimano projection became . . . All of R8070 available to the public in late December except for the GS rear derailleur. Unofficially, the levers and disc brakes won't be available until February or March. (This all sounds very familiar.) And nobody knows or will even guess when the GS rear derailleur will be available.

That being true, I'm planning to go with all the R8070 that's currently available, plus Dura Ace 9170 levers and brakes, plus a 6870 GS rear derailleur. These are all supposedly in stock and my bike will be built up next week. We will see.

GARMIN VECTOR 3 - Garmin has been saying 5 to 8 weeks delivery for a long time. They're still saying 5-8 weeks.

STAGES for Ultegra 8000 - Stages says they will have both the one-sided and the two-sided (LR) Ultegra 8000 power meters available by the end of December. Since Stages will let me use Shimano pedals, Garmin's delay probably means I'm going with Stages on my road bike.

Man, looks like I made the right call on going with 9170 brake/shifters.

Without a doubt. Mine (with 9170 levers/brakes, 6870 GS rear derailleur, and R8070 everything else) is being built up as we speak. Should be delivered tomorrow.

Still not much optimism on the delivery date of the rest of R8070.
