Comfort Bike for First Time Biker

hello everyone,

I’m 23 years old and looking to buy a bike for the first time. I haven’t had one since I was a tween, but I am looking to make my daily walks a bit more interesting. I am overweight but I like to be active and would like something comfortable that would be good for an hour or so a day. Right now, I am in-between the Liv Sedona W and the Specialized Roll. Is the specialized worth the extra hundred-plus bucks? I would like to stay at $500 and under for this bike.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks.

Tell it to a Bike Shop

Crank forward bikes are like motorbikes in that you can stop

and put your feet down, solidly, on the ground when you stop.cruiser bikes are comfortable ..

Gone to find bikes in shops to test ride yet ?

I would not spend a lot of money on a new one if this is your first bike in many years since you might want to change again once you figured out what you like and what you don't like. But I recommend getting measured at a professional bike store. They can make sure you get the right bike for your height, weight, leg length, arm length... Plus you can test ride some bikes and you get a feeling about what you like.
I addition you might want to think if you want to use the bike for your daily errands as well and not just for leisure only. Why take the car to get groceries if you can take the bike? This way you stay active. In this case the bike should support to add a rack for baskets and panniers to haul stuff.

There are many used bikes available. That seems like a good choice.

Yeah, I'd be scanning Craigslist a lot and see what's out there ... A nice used bike will be $XX, but if you decide to move to a somewhat different one, you'll get it all back. New, not so much ...

Learn the brands sold in Walmart and other big box mass merchant shops, so you can avoid them as used 'deals'..

Comfort

I started riding again after many years. Two years ago I purchased a Day 6 Samson. It was comfortable and strong. I rode it 1500 miles the first season. I started riding more and longer rides. The cycling and KETO has me down from 392lbs to 339lbs I was riding at 6'5" 392 I transitioned to a long haul trucker this year because I was ready to go upright and gain efficiency. My weight loss has slowed a bit d/t two surgeries. I rode the Surly long haul 650 miles last season. Looking forward to 2019. I have a 2000 mile goal and am getting into kayaking Check out the Day 6. Best of luck with getting active.

Where you will bike is also the key. Road, trails, or mountains...

If you don't know a quality component from junk, buying a used bike is a crap shoot. One way to separate the wheat from the chaff is to weigh the bike. You are not going to find garbage components on a light bike. Light weight, good components, good wheels, and a good frame all go together. Make sure the size fits you too. When I was reconditioning bikes for kids, it was the second thing I looked at after assessing the components on the bike. I rarely bought anything weighing more than 30 pounds.
