Here we go again
In June of 2017, I had a total right hip replacement. Things went fairly well. I was back on my bike in three months and was up to 40 mile rides. This past May, I began running fever on and off for weeks and feeling just plain crappy. I noticed that my right hip appeared slightly swollen and was warm to the touch. I went in and following c-scan and ultra sounds, a pocket of fluid was discovered just adjacent to the hip. An aspiration was performed and the fluid tested. It came back positive for infection. So, here we go again. Sometimes in January, I will go under the knife again, this time for a two stage revision surgery. First they remove the prosthetic hip and replace it with a plastic spacer laced with antibiotics. I'll have this for approx. two and one half to three months accompanied with daily antibiotic IV's through a port that will be installed I assume and hope during the surgery. Once everything is healed up, they go in again, remove the spacer, and replace it with a new prosthetic, followed by another several months of healing. I'm not really so much concerned about the procedure but am definitely not looking forward to the months of minimum activity healing up. I began riding again at 60 and had gotten up to 64 mile rides. I guess I'll be starting from jump street all over again which really sucks. Has anyone out there been through a two stage revision hip surgery. Please share your experiences.

Something similar happened to a relative who had a knee replaced. He had both done, but one didn't go according to plan and had to be removed to fight off the infection. That appeared to work but he had to spend six weeks without any knee parts. Once the infection cleared (lucikly) he had the knee put back and all is well so far, after two months.
Stay with it and look forward. It will work out.
