Yes, generally they follow a first-letter-corresponding-to-the-year format. For instance, my 1981 Miyata 1000 has a serial number that starts with J. So, K is 1982, L is 1983, etc. BF member T-Mar is the one to consult for all Miyata serial number enquiries.
