Can Someone Explain the High Price?
Check out this set of Mavic Cosmic Carbones listed on ebay: https://cgi.ebay.com/Mavic-Cosmic-Car...QQcmdZViewItem
There's over a hour left till these wheels go off and they are so over priced I can't believe someone is actually going to follow through and pay for them. The seller claims low miles but the spokes are full of chips, the decals are scraped up and they have new bearings installed. Don't really sound or look like wheels with 500 miles total. There is a Dura Ace cassette and tires included in the auction but still seams a couple hundred dollars too high. The last couple bidders look a little suspicious also.

Shill Bidding. A common practise on ebay, aka, fencer's paradise.

Nonsense! There's no obvious shills in that bidding cycle.
And the current bid isn't that high. Wheels MSRP is $1000. The auction includes about $300 worth of tires, cassette, skewers and bags. $940 bid on $1300 is hardly outrageous.
I agree with jimbud; I don't think it will go much higher. But it could - quite legitimately. Ever watch Barrett-Jackson? When two guys want the same car they can drive the price into the stratosphere. Do you accuse the auction of shill bidding ? Same thing on eBay. Absolute value has little to do with an individual auction result.

My primary point is not that the current price is reasonable, but that there is no cause to infer cheating.

you really think shill bidding is that common? everything i have ever sold on ebay sold more than i would have ever paid for it. people go crazy. even here, people discuss "winning" a bike--- on ebay. last time i won something, it was free. the competitive nature of ebay makes people do crazy things.

If you look at the booming legal work created by eBay, you would know that Ebay is indeed a "fencer's paradise".

You were right. It didn't go higher. Look at the bids ([cough], Blaireau). Bidders 10 and 11 have lots of feedback and bid reasonable top prices for the wheels. Bidders 12 and 13 are both inexperienced and obviously found lots of value in the extras, or weren't aware of the street price. (Note that all four top bidders bid only once.)
At this point competition comes in. If either bidder 12 or 13 did not participate, the sell price would have been about $740 and this thread wouldn't exist. That fact that *two* people thought $930 a good price is why it went so high.
You can't attribute this to shills. Shill bidders don't make top bids. They don't want to win! The result was unusual, but the auction looks straight as an arrow to me.

As to that, one imagines that you rail equally against flea markets? Or maybe you have a problem with open commerce, period. What's your solution, shut down eBay?

Keep any eye out on those wheels which will be relisted with the seller saying the winning bidder could not pay or some lame excuse.

I don't much like the change, and you're right: the feedback patterns could be revealing. But phishing is also a problem with online auctions and the change should reduce that.
Now step back for a moment. The practice is heinous, but shill bidding shouldn't affect you as a bidder. Follow these rules:
Now step back for a moment. The practice is heinous, but shill bidding shouldn't affect you as a bidder. Follow these rules:
- Know your maximum bid. Bid it and don't go over it.
- Expect to pay what you bid. Don't expect to get an outrageous deal.
- Don't fixate on one item. Another will come along.
