Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It is. However, a lot of the people who wanted a commuter or casual-use bike didn't already have one, and those people are much less likely to buy now than 2-3 months ago. Ditto people looking to upgrade their road bikes.

are toe covers worth it? or should I just buy a complete bootie? I made it last winter with the gear that I had, but the chilly temperatures last week reminded me how much my feet were cold. Last year I tried two pairs of socks and aluminum foil, but that didn’t really help much.

Also reached out to shimano about my rear wheel, they told me to contact CC. CC told me there wasn’t anything they could do and to take it the shop. Looking like it’s going to be a round 50 bucks for a rear hub over hall. Hopefully this fixes the issue and it doesn’t loosen up again. The play has gotten worse but still no affecting shifting. I have some time off after this trip so plan on taking care of it then. Plan on getting a new chain and some wax, gunna give that route a try.

I do full booties with warm socks when needed, never done covers.

It depends how cold it gets where you ride. I find toe covers are good for insulating my well-ventilated summer shoes in the fall. I use full insulated shoe covers below 40F. I also have a dedicated winter boot that I've been using more on winter rides.

As with gloves, YMMV. I like toe covers, but they only do so much - they're quick and easy to get on/off and they can be stowed while riding - but I want more insulation as temps approach freezing, so that gives them a relatively narrow window.

Booties provide more warmth, but can be a pain to put on/take off and aren't as easily stowed on your person; not great for mid-ride attire changes.

As always, YMMV - your "relatively narrow window" is my "all winter".

I might give them a try then. My toes were the only thing that got really bad, I don’t think my rides will be as long in the winter time, prolly 30 to 40 miles, I will have to start later in the morning.

Heh. Well, I don't feel much need for them until 50⁰ or so, and then I want booties in the mid-30s.

If you can't pre-hydrate, liquid refreshment is key. Especially if it's full of essential malt elements.

Do you ever ride when the temps are between 45 and 55? If so, they're worth it. So much easier to deal with than full booties.

One pair of shoes I had were ventilated in the toes, so when fall arrived, I'd put one of those instant, stick-on tube patches over the hole, in addition to the toe booties.

Everyone has a different tolerance for the cold. I like toe covers for temps 30-40, and save the booties for teens or twenties. So I like both.

I use toe covers and Merino wool socks down into the 30s. Pcad told me about using chemical warmers inside the toe covers when it gets into the 20s. Never found booties to cover my size 49s.

I've also used Gore-tex socks for mountain biking in the snow but they are too sweaty if it's not really cold. Sometimes I carry them on the long climb up and put them on before the descent. They block all of the wind.

I've seen people use plastic bags over their socks but I haven't tried that.

I rode the whole winter, i think the coldest was 28 degrees. But most of my rides were 32 to 40. I like the socks mentioned, so I might start with the toe warmers, and get the socks as needed. If gets to the point where I am still bothered i’ll grab a pair of booties.
