Schwinn Super Sport - serial #
Hi all.
I have a Schwinn Super Sport which had belonged to my late husband. From what I can determine, the head plate says Schwinn Chicago. The serial # is below the crankcase and reads SA6 13022, then below it is the number 840. I am looking to find out the year and eventually determine its value. Can anyone help?
Thank you,
Lorelei

Welcome Lorelei. Do you have any photos of the bike? You'll need to make 10 posts here before you can post pictures, but there's a workaround. Go ahead and try to post the pics to this thread. You won't see them here, but they'll be in your photo gallery and we'll be able to view them.
Also, look very closely at the head badge. You may need a magnifying glass (I usually do). There's a small 4-digit number stamped on it. The last digit is the year within the decade, and the first three digits are the ordinal date (1-366) within the year.

Hello Madpogue! Thank you for your reply. I was able to locate the number on the head badge. It is 9080. I don't know the decade. Either the 80s or the 90s. I tried to upload photos to an album but it didn't allow. Maybe the images were too large, I'll make a lower resolution version and try again. Can you see any of them - maybe 6 were attempted.
Thanks!
Lorelei

Looks like an 86, equipped with Shimano 600. First year for indexed shifting. Looks to me like a 24 inch frame and has been nicely kept and maintained.
Around here that’s a $350 bike if in generally good condition, a bit less if lt needs more than tires and tubes.
Your location and selling method will determine ultimate value.
Sorry for your loss...

Headbadge number is 0806, so yes, a 1986. Catalog page - Schwinn catalogs, 1981 - 1990 (289 of 456)
Specs - Schwinn catalogs, 1981 - 1990 (311 of 456)
Sorry, I should have mentioned -- for a full-bike photo, it's best to shoot it from the drive (right) side. Still, looks to be in very good condition. $350 sounds like a good starting-point figure, depending on the market where you are. The Super Sport was second to top of the non-Paramount Schwinn road bike line. The large size may make it a slower seller. "Ready to ride" is a major selling factor; maybe one of your husband's bike buddies can help you prep the bike. Good photos and detailed info about the frame and components in the ad will make a huge difference; potential buyers will get the message that you know what a quality bike you have to sell.

Set up the bike properly for pics of the drive-side with the top tube of the frame horizontal to the flat ground. Lower the stem and level the saddle. Find a beautiful fence or wall as a backdrop. It requires some effort, but take the best pics you can manage. This work will pay off in time and price. Pics sell the bike.
If you're in a big market and want to sell quickly, price it at $100 firm.
If you have time to sell and want a better price, try $320 and drop the price each week or two, until November, then relist/restart in March/Spring. With good pics (and a good, bike-friendly market), a $220 price may get sold as soon as this October.

Thanks very much for your suggestions. The pics I posted are, of course, not those that I would use to sell. I'm also not in a hurry. Still gathering information.
Again, thank you.

Yep. When I am ready to sell, I will take suitable photos. I really just wanted to get something out there so you could see. Thank you so much for the information you have provided. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Four years ago, I bought this same year Super Sport in similar clean condition for $165. I think that was an unusually good deal. Earlier this year I bought a pink 87 Super Sport in time capsule condition on eBay. $199 with tax and shipping bringing total outlay to $301.
Location is definitely a variable. Despite the $350-$600 asking prices you see for these, I bet transaction prices are more like $250-$300.
