DT Swis 240s Ring Nut Removal

I'm having trouble removing the ring nut from my 240s hub. I have the correct tool and I'm turning the wheel counterclockwise, but the nut is really tight. I tried the tool in a vise and I tried using a wrench on the tool.

Any suggestions?

Steve

The ring in the hub shell that the ratchet gears engage is often very tight. I have removed these a few times and always am surprised at the high level of effort I've had to apply. Focus, steady application of force, tight spokes, care to not twist the rim are all a part of the successful loosening. Andy.

Thanks for the reply Andy. I was surprised how tight the ring nut is. I'm a bit afraid that I'll ruin the wheel, but I'll try again.

I once had to replace the bearings in a 240s that was built with light spokes, into a light wheel, as used by an Elite mtb racer. He had much power and did many miles, and the wheel was not very stiff rotationally. The trailing spokes were noticeably bowing when the ring finally cracked loose.

Thanks for the reply, tomacropod.

It appears I'll have to put a significant amount of torque on the wheel to remove the ring nut. The wheels are light, so I guess there is a chance I might break a spoke or worse. I think I'll get a new seal just to be sure. I don't want to do this more often than necessary.
