Shimano 600 Freewheel MF-6208 cog compatibility?
I have a Shimano 600 freewheel with some cogs that are getting worn. Are there any options for swapping out the cogs with other Shimano freewheels, perhaps older 6 speed MF-HG20 freewheels which are in bigger supply (and are also hyperglide to boot) ? I know the freewheel can be disasembled down to a plain body that is very similar to a freehub, and the internals of the 600 freewheel are nice, so it would be cool to know of a way to keep it in service
Thanks
Thanks

The MF-6208, MF-7400, and MF-Z012 all used a threaded outer cog (or two on the 7 speed MF-7400), and two different sizes of splined cogs for the other positions. They vary as to finish, and possibly material quality, but are fully interchangable between each other. I'm pretty sure the newer hyperglide freewheel cogs will fit, but you will need to grind down the one wide spline.

I dont believe the cogs on the MF-TZ20 are interchangable with those you mention. At a minimum the larger cogs are riveted together and only one has a spline. The body (as I recall it) is totally different than the MF-6208. I had one and was thinking the same thing, somI took it apart.
Otoh, the new ones are nice as they are. I just buy t hose when I need a replacement.

As frantik mentioned, is there some way to avoid that horrific black cog, or is painting it really the only option?

That riveted construction isn't the end of the world. Thanks to it, these new freewheels are much lighter than the ones that came before.

I'm OK with the black cog, but as you said- there's gold paint as well.
