I live at 4500 feet, in South Eastern AZ, and my typical 22 mile ride has about 1000+ feet of elevation gain.
I'm not bashing because some people simply have no practice doing hills. Clermont is really hilly for FL I do remember that!

Climbing in Florida does sound funny. But that's a pretty steep hill. Here's the Strava segment for Sugarloaf Mountain Hill. It's 200 feet in about a half mile. Strava shows that most of the middle section is more than a 10% grade. I can see why some riders that aren't used to hills would walk it, especially if they got caught behind a weaving rider, and had to stop.
(Maybe the photo was taken on a different hill. It doesn't look like the photo matches the satellite photo of Sugarloaf. I don't see the houses in the background on the map.)
The whole 100 mile route has 5,000 feet of climbing, mostly in rollers under 75 feet high.

Keep in mind that these people are cyclists signed up for a large event with other cyclists and are considerably fitter than many others living in the same area.

Yeah, Florida is actually pretty average ranked at 29. Now. . .Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky on the other hand. . . .

M 5,189 miles for the year shows 33,708 feet of climbing. That's 6.496 feet per mile. Most of that is over a bridge with a 70-foot rise that I do a few times a week. Or, the 33k feet is just GPS drift.

Throw the stick!!!!
Mine is about the same. 6,460 miles with right around 300,000 feet of climbing. We have a lot of bridges.

Great thread, Velo Gator.
Those people would die if they came out here... This is a fun local ride - 5,240 feet of elevation gain over 17 miles:

You know what? I think those people are great. You know how you get good at climbing - climb more. And assuming most of those people are not used to climbing at all I can understand why they have to walk it. At least they're walking up the hill and not SAGing in. As for them being out of shape and overweight I agree. But once again I think they're great. They didn't get out of shape and overweight by cycling 75 miles in a day - they did it by sitting around too much and eating too much. They should be encouraged for making a positive change in their life.

LOL..if you go in there, talk to Alice, who is super nice. Drew has sold me some bargain stuff, such as my wife's Six13 frameset for $150. He gets some good closeout deals as he used to be the regional Cannondale rep.

The normal San Antonio training ride outside of Tampa. I know, it isn't mountains, but when people are hammering up an 8% grade for 1/4 mile full tilt at 18mph....after 5-6 of those....hope your interval training is up to snuff. It's a lot different riding rolling hills, than just steadily going up a 5% grade at 8mph.
