suggestions on this route

Like safety, if you're familiar with those roads are bicycles allowed on them, etc?

Ummmmm -
Did you just Google Map it?
Or did you use state DOT bicycling and traffic info?

A lot of your MD/Del portion, primarily the US-40 and Rt1 sections are high traffic roads. Most have wide shoulder, but are almost interstate level in their traffic. US1 through DE carries most all of the southbound beach traffic to Rehobeth/Bethany/Ocean City, MD.

US30 in PA can be treacherous though. Two lane with high speed traffic and no shoulders. They've actually banned truck traffic due to the hairpins and room on the road.

Have you considered a route where you pick up the Great Allegheny Passage out of McKeesport and run down to DC? There's 330 miles of bike/hike only there. Only issue with that is then getting across the Chesapeake. There's also a rail trail out of New Freedom PA that runs south toward Baltimore than could be routed in to your existing.

Depends if you're trying to do this all via road. Feel free to share your thoughts there. We've biked/lived all over that PA/MD/DE area. Biggest thing I'd say no way no how on are the Rt 30 pieces. Depends on your comfort level though, so your thoughts may vary.

Regards,
Roger

Google mapped and then altered the course.
I've tried some of the states DOT sites. I threw this one out there to get some input.

Yes, I have done most of the area in the West you are talking about.

Oregon/Washington -

I rec the Cathlamet Ferry rather than then Longview bridge - then WA 4 to Longview.
Old Pacific Hwy is better than WA 411.
WA 508 has much less traffic than US 12 east of I-5.
White Pass isn't too bad. Great camping on the east side.
Back road from Naches to Yakima.
The Columbia Basin can be dangerously HOT in summer.
When are you planning to do this?
No services east of Yakima for 90 miles.
Still no designated camping at Hanford Reach N.M.
If you are discrete, you can probably camp at the picnic area on the river.
US 195 from Colfax to Lewiston is busy.
US 12 from Pomeroy to Lewiston is better.

-The GAP might not be a bad plan.
- I'm not really trying to this all road, I will be on a touring bike though, so I'd like to stay with a relatively nice surface.
- my three places I want most is, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and Gettysburg. Maybe I'll have to eliminate Gettysburg. Since we will be on bicycles, putting together a route has been tough.
I'll have to research more and look into more of the dot bicycle sites, however, some do not exist.

If you're using your existing, may see if you can use part of this in the north side of MD. It intersects your route and is honestly a beautiful trail.

Depends on your tolerance for traffic. I have ridden sections of both and didn't think they were all that bad. You could certainly find lighter traveled rural roads for some of that though.

BTW you would need to get a ride across the Susquehanna on that route. Probably better to cross the Susquehanna on Route 1. Rt 1 in that area is nice riding, fairly rural and rolling hills. The dam is a bit scary but do-able.

I second the Cathlamet ferry instead of the Longview bridge.

I know its just a little bit but I am from the Peoria IL area, The bridge that you show crossing (24 in to 150) is not the best bridge to cross, there is no extra space on that bridge & when you cross it there is no shoulder at all, cars kindof drive crazy in that area, there is a bridge a little south (witch is William Kumpf Blvd its apart of 40) That bridge has lots of room I go over it all the time, The rest of that area seems pretty descent,

You could still go over the other bridge, I mean it is legal, but Me personally find it it iffy, & I'm actually all about doing iffy things.

Where do you plain on staying, Camping, hotel, side of the road?

We would like to do most of it by camping or side of the road. Every few days ideally it would be some place where we can shower, etc.
Is it better to plan your route around places you want to end up or figure out where to camp once you plan your route? I'm glad I have time to figure this out.
