beginner question

i have a trek alpha 4300. i thought i was going to be occasionally riding through a state park, but the other people in the group dipped out. so now i ONLY ride this bike on paved bike paths. I am looking for advice on what the best road mountain bike tires are. i will not be riding in the rain, only when it is nice outside.

Search this forum for "slicks" or "road tire" or look in the commuting forum

Keep the tires you have. Ride on dirt. Problem solved.

It's worth getting something like a 26x1.75 tires with a smoother thread pattern. I like to have some thread on my tires (vs slicks) for travelling through grass and dirt. Pedaling effort will be much less than with knobbies and I wouldn't be surprised if your average speed increased by about 2 mph.

Besides if you plan on doing some mountiain biking you can always switch back to the knobbies for the weekend.

If by "good" you mean heavier, noisier, and slower, then you're right.
