Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Harder to change rear wheel?

Is it just me or is it harder to change a rear wheel with with the newer style Shimano shadow rear derailleur? Especially on older road bikes with slightly more horizontal dropouts.

I feel like i have to be a lot more careful getting the cage out of the way. Any advice? I feel like I'm going to snap it one of these days.

I usually put things in the big ring and little cog. Going to try dropping too the little ring up front next time to see if that helps.

It's... different. Not necessarily harder, just feels different.

To remove:
- Little ring in front, little ring at the back.
- Loosen the quick release.
- Grab the end of the rear derailleur and pull back.
- Lift the bike by the seat and wheel automatically drops out.

To replace:
- Grab the end of the rear derailleur and pull back.
- Align chain with little ring.
- Gently put the bike back down and wheel automatically slots back in.
- Tighten quick release.

edit: Ok, I missed the comment about older style hangars that are more horizontal... but for modern ones it does feel a little different from the older (105, 6800, etc) models but not more difficult, just different.

Every time I get a different style DR I think it's harder. By the time I get another DR the difficult one will seem like the simplest.

Yeah, I ran into this with my new Canyon. It's got discs and a 105 groupset, and the things I've always done with the pre-2008 derailleurs I'm used to weren't working. The derailleur kept snapping back into place and kicking the wheel out. I finally figured out you have to pull the wheel a lot farther up than you do with the old ones.
