Road Cycling in Philippines??
#26
LET'S ROLL
If one wants to ride with the least amount of problems
(traffic congestion, pollution, pedestrians, etc); just do
the same thing that some roadies here in NYC do - ride
early in the mornings. For me I'm used to riding in heavy
traffic. From the time I was a kid in Quezon City, Manila;
riding a BMX from neighborhood to neighborhood. To the
time I moved to New York City. Even back in 2010 when I
went back to visit and stayed in Ortigas, Manila; rode
around the city on a mountainbike.
Edit: PS, as others have already mentioned, visit the countryside.

Do you guys realize that the OP has probably been back in the UK since 2006, based on the information in his first post? This is one of the oldest thread resurrections I've seen in a while.

Thesis
GOOD EVENING TO ALL!
My name is Enzo, I'm a 4th year student and I am currently doing my thesis on biking.
My thesis is about Cycling around Metro Manila and one of the problems is that we tend to use unsafe roads that leads us to destinations. Even as new cyclists like me, it gets tricky and at some point, dangerous.
My proposal is making an App for cyclist. A social and directional app. Like wayze, this app can help guide you through the city with routes safe to go to whether it be daytime or evening. Its special features includes:
- user to make new routes (a route that they know that no one has tried) and can share his/her "Mapped out route" to other users.
- App updates certain/all user's contacts where he/she is ( Includes how long they've stopped at a certain point and when they reach their destination)
- users can meet each other while heading to said destination (Like a gang of cyclists)
^( Objective of this whole gang of cyclists is to create a safe zone for users and interact with one another)
That is all I got for now. Please tell me what you think! Thank you!!!!

I follow some Youtubers like Ian How,etc. and man, it looks crazy to ride there and yet so many ride through all that traffic! Now I know why most ride mountain bikes on the city after you mentioned that. Makes sense. I lived there for the first 21 years of my life and it looks like the roads haven't changed. lol

Initial post was in 2005! Definitely, this is in the running for the oldest thread resurrection ... seems like someone finds it again every 6 or 7 years.
Having said that, cycling in Manila would seem to me (married a Filipina who's from Manila and have been there quite a few times over the years) to be a "risky endeavor".
And, having said THAT, we visited Mayon Volcano my last trip to the Philippines and I must say, the road around the base of the volcano looked like a really cool place to ride. Sadly, the morning we checked out of our Bed and Breakfast I met the husband of the woman who had primary responsibility for managing the place - as it turns out, he's a cyclist and had a spare bike he could loan to me - said he did that ride all the time. One of my life regrets is that I didn't just check back in and take him up on the offe.

Hi,
Off to Manila in the Philippines in the next couple of weeks and will be there for a year or so. Wondering whether to take my bike with me. So, I was wondering if anyone on the forums has been to the Philippines or whether anyone resides there, especially Manila, and taken their bike with them or done any cycling in the area? I'd be interested to hear about local cycling activity - regular riding groups for training with etc, local clubs, safety in terms of road safety/likelihood of being kidnapped as a westerner (probably unlikely but it happens!), general perception of cycling by the general public there, and also if anyone knows of any web links I can read about Philippine cycling. I am aware there is a Philippine pro team by the name of Casino (?) and that they do have a national Tour Pilipinas which will be held in April this year. Have looked at the national Philippine cycling organisation website but it didn't seem to be working. Also be interested to hear from anyone who's been there at all, not necessarily cycling, and what it's like...you can only get some idea from reading a number of books/internet articles.
Cheers.
