Proposed New Age Standard
So I turned 79 last week. and decided that I should ride 79...(wait for it)...minutes. So I did it, and it felt good. So how about it? Anyone up for an age/minutes standard that takes over when you are past 75?
Yes, I could have ridden 79 miles,,,well, maybe spread over a week.

Maybe as I'm not there yet. I'm just pleased and lucky that I can still ride my age (69 by New Years). I'll take it. Back in June I took my drop bar mtn bike and rode 100 miles on our Delaware and Lehigh trail from about 6am to 4:30pm. Beautiful day.
But I ain't as good as I once was so your new goal may look good to me soon. At this point I do 4 to 5 hour rides with little planning. Just what food and water to haul.

How 'bout if age is the max time you are required to ride any one ride, but you still have to accumulate the mileage of your age during that week?
Still reeks of setting the bar low, at least for my current circumstances. But who knows, when I'm 79, I might see it from a different perspective.

We rode our tandem 70 miles for my wife's 70th. I was 74. Only 2300' of climbing. Went well. I usually can't ride on my birthday because we're out at our very rural cabin, but later I'll ride more than twice my age. + 9800' I've been training to be able to do this for the past 25 years and so far, I have no reason to stop.

I think that whatever feels challenging and enjoyable to the rider is reasonable. The mileage standard still works for me but at some point that could change.

Since it's usually Wintry in January, my birthday month, I've never attempted to ride my age on my BD. Next one is 71, which would be a challenge. Just glad to be able to ride sometimes, some mileage, on the day in question.

Seconds, Minutes, Hours, KMs, Miles --- as long as one is out riding it means one is ALIVE.
Ride the chosen amount of time or distance and enjoy.
A July birthday in flat SW FL means easy miles unless wind and/or rain. Hoping to continue my streak of doubling age + 1 extra mile as the years continue and providing the PCa (Prostate Cancer) don't get me down.

At 79, if I'm still capable, I'll ride any distance that pleases me and call it a WIN for a Birthday. 9 to go.
I'd like to ride on my 90th, too.

Last year, at 65 I rode 130 miles, double my age. I'm going to try to stay in double-my-age shape as long as I can but then may have to switch over to riding my age. It'll be a while before I start thinking about minutes.

There are 6 or 8 guys in my club who are members of the '40' club (born in 1940.) About half of them are slowing down a bit; well to be fair they were never members of the big dog group; but the other half are still doing 40-60 mile rides at 18-20 mph. Not quite race-ready, but still pretty respectable.

79 minutes is great! You are an inspiration.
I do think some of the emphasis on extreme endurance could cause harm. Atrial fibrillation or other heart issues can occur in older athletes. Perhaps a 20 to 30 minute limit for fastish rides would be wise for us seniors. We can easily walk all day at a slow pace, so there is nothing wrong with riding all day either if the heart is not straining. If I can ride a 79 mile day at 79 years I'll be very happy with that.
