Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Build Thread: Ritchey Breakaway Steel Black Beauty

Join me, friends, as I put together this steel Ritchey Breakaway. It's one of a couple of projects I have going on to help me hopefully maintain a modicum of sanity through the end of COVID. Or, at least, whatever sanity I started with.

My wife has officially cut me off of buying bike frames, which... Yeah, she has a point. I did go a little nuts the last few months.

This is going to be a mix of a parts bin build plus a few new parts. The idea of the finished build is a do-it-all bike I can take with me, throw together, and then explore, do group rides, etc.

Here's the frame and fork as she lies currently.

My plan for this bike is that it's great to ride, but LOOKS too crappy to steal. Of course, if someone knows what it is they might realize they can easily take it apart and steal most of it, but I think anyone with that much knowledge of bikes hopefully isn't a thief.

I'm looking forward to this. Let's do it!

S&S couplings? Something I haven't heard of?

Looks like a good touring frame

The Breakaway is Ritchey's take on the S&S couplers idea, yeah but different.

First job is to knock down the white fork so it looks a little less white. Even though it has plenty of wear on it I want the whole bike to be black.

Also I have some black plastidip laying around in the garage, so let's see how this works.

That fork looks like it's in the process of being chip sealed.

Not far off from the finish I'll probably get. This is my first experient with PlastiDip and it's not coming out exactly smooth.

But the whole idea is to make the bike look too crappy to steal so... result?

Fork is now officially patina'd.

I've typed this like 10 times now. For some reason every time I try to post the forums delete all the text and say my message is too short.

Not sure what's up with that. But anyway, time to let the fork cure a little.

Fork is dipped and stuck back on the bike. Pretty happy with the result.

Unfortunately the front canti brake hanger isn't gonna work. I will have to investigate some other option for that.

The rear canti brake hanger is going to take a little fiddling as well. Still, progress!

Again, I had to type this message twice. Why does it keep saying "The message you entered is too short.?" I typed all this in and added photos. Bizarre.

https://www.amazon.com/Tektro-Front-.../dp/B006GHDRYC

Get one of these from any number of online or local retailers. It costs $12-20 depending and works perfectly. It also helps reduce fork shudder, which is common with canti brakes and carbon forks.
You may need to use a couple spacers behind it to bump the hanger out a bit to clear the lower headset. The spacers/washers are included.

.
Why not?

(edit) nevermind. I see the issue now.

Just get a dropped cable mount, or use vee-brakes.

I've seen crappier bikes than that stolen. Are you going to put Trek stickers on it?

How dare you besmirch the Great Trek Bicycle Company. The very nerve!

I have used those drop hangers before but I think I'm going to try one of these jobbers this time.
