Articles included in this post are:
"Coming of Age" - Editorial
"Expedition Dragon" - the itinerant Ian Hibell in Indonesia
"Technical Q & A"

"Gearing to Suit You" by Frank Berto is a jewel.
This article is a 17-page distillation of Berto's previous drivetrain and customized gearing articles.
It is available in pdf here for the next week or until I remember to pull it down: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AgHfxA8atbGnlwMh...2sa3S?e=9yvxYR

As usual, let me know if you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC.
Just send me a PM that includes your email address and I'll send you a pdf of your requested article or insert it later in a separate post to this thread.

dang, I'd swear that was Drew Barrymore on the cover!

Good to see the Frank Berto article on gearing. I didn't realize that the idea of "compact" gearing existed at the time. i.e. the version that I'm familiar with uses 50-34 chainrings, providing fairly wide gears at the expense of a clumsy switch between chainrings. Frank's version used 52-36 rings, but otherwise used the same concepts.

Calculating gearing has been something useful and sort of entertaining for me, but I've tended to rely heavily on logarithms to make the calculations pretty direct. I'd like to think that Frank did the same, but I give him credit for trying to make it comprehensible to the average person. I'm not sure I'd have the patience for that.

+1, if the issue date on the magazine was a little later!

Yeah, me either.
I'm kind of fond of the advertisements for products that never really made it.....or at least as far as I know.
