Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I plan to ride a bike tomorrow. I have this saddle to test and all. I've looked over the questionaire and, at minimum they want 30 miles a week. Simple, if not for the knee issue. Vamos a ver.

No blow out, found it at the gate, tire was holding air but it had to be changed. Luckily it didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it was going to.

I blindly ride without any idea of my cadence. The one time I checked, it was in the 80-90 range. Now though, just tooling around, it is likely much lower. The daily high winds start up at around 8. I hope to be on the road by 6:30, and maybe back in by 8.

Rest week hit, and I was waking up at night more and more with a cough. I set an appointment a couple weeks ago for yesterday, and wasn't sure I was going to make it. Once the rest week was over, I tried some scheduled 2 minute 125% intervals, and could only make it a minute before giving up.. It continued to get worse, and sleeping was something I was beginning to dread, because every 1.5-2 hours, I was awake with a non productive coughing fit. Then, breathing became tougher.

Yesterday, Lotus had an appointment at the ophthalmologist to see if/when she needed entropion surgery, and I had to carry her up a flight of stairs. She's never seen a full flight of stairs, so she put the brakes on. At least she figured it out and was able to walk down them! At the top, I thought I was going to pass out. Breathing with a mask on became almost impossible, but I was able to catch my breath and continue on with the appt. Sucked! Either way, x-rays, ekg, all shows OK and no Covid, so I get some high zoop Wixela powdered inhaler, and some Prednisone. Getting old sucks.

Last night was the first time I got a good nights sleep in over two weeks.

So both you and the dog are ailing? What the hell is your condition all about, that doesn't sound like "overtraining".

Yep. I try to maximize my days off, and the dog and I get appts on the same day. We knew she would need her plastic surgery, as it's slightly normal for that breed. It's a shame, and they're trying to breed it out, but it's not there yet.

At the end of winter, the verge of many roads are full of debris, mostly sand but branches and stones also. On my ride home I was getting forced out into heavy traffic so I took to the sidewalks. The town, in the last day, made a pass with a street cleaning machine so the verge is safe to ride again.

In other pills and ills news, I have more crap to deal with. It seems apparent to me that beta blockers reduce your tolerance to heat. I noticed it the last time I rode and today I tried weeding the flower beds. After 45 minutes in 81 degree temperature and overcast skies, I'm cooked like I was out there all day.

This could be problematic in the quasi-south. SMH

Posted this over on the P&R jusst to piss people off, but it really is good news about the mRNA vaccines and maybe the others. The TLDR is the vaccines prevent infection, not just illness, and presumably transmission in the community.

Saturday is one of my ride days, but my wife had other ideas for how I should spend my day. So, post-freeze backyard cleanup it was. Trimmed all shrubs, cut off about 50 palm fronds (anyone need Palm Sunday supplies?), dug up some dead plants, and hit the nurseries for replacements. Kicked my ass. Had to remind her that I'm not 60 anymore.

I deal with that. Have to plan strenuous activities for cooler parts of the day. No afternoon rides in July for example. After a while you'll build a bit of tolerance. Just be careful.

Went with club #2 for a short-ish ride. Lots of fun and I felt pretty good for a while. First climb is up a semi-busy canyon for 5 miles. Guy behind me keeps yelling "CAR Back, CAR Back" for miles. I tried to pull away and I did but he would get close again when it got steeper. I almost told him to STFU but I don't know him well enough for that. Down the other side another guy flats, 14 of us are watching him fumble with it for a looong time when another guys tire goes poof. Second guy is struggling, too, so someone helps him. They get done about the same time as the first guy but it goes flat again.

After that was over we start on a 10 mile shallow climb into a headwind. The 6'7" guy is pulling and when the lady on his wheel pulls out, I jump on his wheel. After a few miles I start to feel guilty so I go to the front. Everyone seems happy with this arrangement so it looks like I'm pulling to the turn off until someone jumps out and passes me. These people aren't familiar with pacelines except to just sit on whoever is willing to pull. I don't mind but if you're going to the front after sitting on for miles at least give the leader a little break.
I really did have a good time, I just thought I would share a little whining with you guys.

isn't that what vaccines are designed to do? It is very good news I don't understand the hesitancy. That's all I'm going to say about that. Out on the thin ice with @Velo Vol

Good to know. Mrs BD just got her second shot yesterday, and a week from today we’re hitting the road. FREE AT LAST! (Relatively speaking)

That’s a natural question and this stuff is not very intuitive. The “endpoint” of the trials which led to the Emergency Use Authorization of the vaccines was prevention of clinical disease. That’s the lowest bar for a vaccine to clear. It would have also been a huge undertaking to do repeated testing of such huge study groups and they didn’t do it. Therefore, the question of whether the vaccines prevent infection, per se, has had to wait for studies like this. One thing I’ve learned recently is that many effective vaccines actually don’t.
