Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I rode into town again yesterday, and spent the bulk of the day wielding a pick. I was hobbling again last evening. It might turn out to be permanent. Reminds me of Jorge Luis Borges short stories.

The 'crapload of tools' arrived, so I was able to take off the pedals and cranks, and take out the BB. It was in great shape, didn't really even need to be serviced, but I cleaned it all up anyway. Washed the frame, which cleaned up nice but will need polishing. And touchup!

Also cleaned all the bits, which was quite a chore! The rear derailleur was barely functioning - it moved sideways appropriately, but the cage was stuck. Took apart both of what I just learned are called knuckles.. regreased and put back together. Then took one apart again when I saw one of the washers on the floor. Oops. Works great now!

The cassette....That was at least an hour's work! I'm pretty sure that the last owner never cleaned it, but rather just kept adding more lube. But now it's shiny!

Took apart the hubs and repacked them, with new bearings. They didn't really need it either. The whole thing is really well sealed. Not only do the cones have rubber seals, but then there's another rubber cap on top of that. I removed the mismatched tires and mounted the Vittoria Corsa G+'s I'd bought on a whim. Circuits originally came with gumwalls, but they were 700 x 19!

All the bits are ready to install, but I need to work on the frame. I already have a clay bark kit and Scratch-X for polishing. I have dark red Testors enamel for touchups, too.

There are so many special touches to the Sante groupset. I can see why it was only made for a year or so, because a lot of them are kind of fiddly, like those little caps on the shifter cable end holes. They're not just stuffed into the holes. They attach to the cable end, and pulling the cable through pulls them down into place. On the QR skewers, the nut end doesn't thread all the way through, so the end is closed. You can see it in the pic above. And they contain rubber/plastic inserts that carry on the color scheme of the group. The pedal sockets in the crank arms aren't drilled all the way through, so the back of the crank doesn't have a big hole in it. The brakes are just frakkin' gorgeous! It's gonna be fun putting it all back together!

Just got back from a stay at a cabin in BFE. traffic sucked on Friday so it took 3 hours instead of 2. That destroyed my back and ruined the weekend. All we did was a 2 mile trail walk with 235 feet of elevation. I can't wait until I feel better after the injection.
Had a nice enclosed porch but it was too chilly to enjoy.

Well damn, now I feel like I should get that BillyD sized Rossin just for the Sante cranks and put 'em in this frame (which has the ugliest imaginable graphics but I'm sure the ride is sublime)

Awesome warm and sunny day today with temps in the low 60s and no wind to speak of. I rode to Colt State Park, a mere 2 miles. There is a broad walkway adjacent to the Bay that was loaded with tiny kids on tiny bikes and families. The town beach right next door had some kids with no shoes already splashing in the water. Soon now the beach area will be full of lovelies in bikinis with less fabric than my face mask. I usually ride over, as it is close to home, with a book to read. I intend to get a lot of reading done this summer. Bristol has a board walk next to the harbor with people sprawled out soaking up sun. Lots of bike and visitors about. A fine day but I need to remember that March is a cruel month.

You need real vegetables. Try a fresh tossed salad.

At least I'm not as bad as Ted King - he's just sayin' "**** it," and using maple syrup for his on-ride gels.

I'm sorry to say I don't like the paint either. I guess I like a solid color bike.

Never did like red either. A friend from C&V is big on them so I bought one. The ride is meh.
