Not MTB's but sharing that this option is viable too.

Cheap 'fixie' handlebar off taobao (ebay probably has the same thing), which has the same bar diameter as flat bars.
As long as the curve of the bar is not too acute, the trigger shifter should thread thru.

The top bike is really nice.

Finally moved to a new online host so I can share a pic of my diamondback. I have added fenders since the pic was taken. I also plan a repaint when the weather gets better.

Bianchi Grizzly

Recently picked this Bianchi Grizzly up for $20. Been wanting to do a dirtdrop, but haven't come across the right frame. I'm a little worried about how long the top tube is, anyone have any experience with this? Besides that for the most part, not being picky. Have a few routes I could go with the stuff I have laying around.

I had one for a while. It's pictured upthread somewhere; more than once I believe. I used Midge bars, which have a lot less reach than what you are showing. Also used a dirtdrop stem to get them up high. Anyway, nice bike. I liked how it rode and had fun with it.

Oh, and $20 is a steal!

Did that come with a 1" steerer? If not, what have you done to use that Nitto stem?

Here's my recently-completed Giant Iguana, which I purchased second-hand in '88 or so. Heavily inspired by @Velognome's stationwagon from 2012 (nice work by @USAZorro too!) Right now it's my commuter ride but I hope to take it on a tour this year, ideally the C & O Canal trail. Really loving the way it rides.

That is nice. Tasteful.
Wonder if that is the same as a Sierra that they made for Schwinn?

Beautifully done. That will handle the C&O Canal very nicely (have ridden the full distance twice, and the eastern half once). Be sure to dismount and walk in the paw-paw tunnel.

Different opinion here (well slightly). I would agree that the threadless adaptor *can* look horrible, but it can also look OK, particularly if the threaded headset and stem are both black and there isn't a gigantic rise on the stem.

Performance-wise I couldn't detect any negative impact, if anything it stiffened up the feel of the front end a bit.

Again, just my opinion of course. And in the words of the late, great Christopher Hitchens, 'who else's would it be?'

Different-er yet, I'm all for it. I've used a tall Technomic stem for the right rise and reach in the past and I agree that it's more elegant than most options, but I'm not going to the time, trouble and expense of finding one when a quill adapter and riser threadless stem gets me in the right position right now. Photo below shows my touring bike but I have a similar setup ready to go on my Cimarron. You may not think it's pretty but when it's time to ride I don't care.

I have an Origin8 oversized quill stem that does a similar job. It looks bloody awful but gets my contact points where I need them on my commuter rig.

Defintely NOT pretty. But a really tall Technomic yoinked way up to the stratosphere isn't really a huge improvement over that. Still, I'd go for that or a dirt drop riser stem as my first two choices when mating to a 1" steerer.

Not bad. I've been wondering if anyone makes 7/8"--1-1/8" spacers that would make the rise look more "integrated."

Not sure exactly what you mean, but on mine the quill adaptor is a 22.2 quill to fit into the steerer tube and the top portion is 25.4, same as the outside diameter of that steerer. The threadless stems are made to fit a 1" steerer and a 25.4 diameter handlebar. I guess I could stack some washers on the quill to reduce the "difference" or the transition you see where the quill meets the stem but that seems like it might only improve the looks and I don't feel the need for that.

I ended up selling on that chrome Mongoose (waaaaay upthread )without building it up.

However...

Thanks to a very generous, puckish imaginary internet friend, I have this cool very light fillet-brazed 1996 or 1997 Caloi thing.
It's mostly conventional here with Deore Parallax 8-speed running gear and a Rockshox Judy C fork.

Caloi_part_assembled by klorpus, on Flickr

Caloi_drop_bars by klorpus, on Flickr

And thanks to the Twin Cities bike swap today, it has a decently suspension corrected Bontrager fork. Add some nice sleeved SR Rando bars, along with Diacompe non aero levers and a set of Suntour barcons. Later on, a nickel Velo Orange Cigne stem will go on.

Anyone see where I'm going here?

Nice job!

At the risk of repeat, what bars are those and have you had a chance to use them ?

I have been thinking of converting the 1985 Kuwahara Sierra Grand I acquired ( free ) over to some rando handlebars - it appears that a Nitto Technomic stem will work ( or a dirt drop ) - I have two other bikes I use them on and like the V.O. rando handlebars.

Obviously I will need brake levers and would prefer bar end shifters, any suggestions as to fenders? I imagine V.O. sells some for 26" wheels. Although I do not use the bike that much it is great for those times I go onto trails, the conversion might have me taking it out more which would be a bonus. It is actually a very good looking machine with nice lugs and other frame details - double eyelets, rear rack mounts, double water bottle bosses, vertical rear dropouts, scalloped seat stay caps I understand it was pretty well top of the line for the production year. Any thoughts?

I actually feel perhaps I should just leave it stock as i like the bull moose handlebars but regardless I will definitely hold onto the original parts if I go ahead.

And it's rolling.

First impression is it's a fast bike with whippy, racy handling. Even with the long wheelbase and that mongo WTB tire up front, it's faster than my Volpe from a standing start. Just shy of 26 lbs in this configuration.
