Does anyone have info on who makes a bike rack that holds 6 bikes?
I was pretty sure Softride used to make one, but I just called them and they said that they never made a rack that held 6 bikes.

Yakima, Thule and Saris all make hitch racks that holds five, but not six bikes. The biggest from RockyMounts holds just four.

If you have to have six, I would have a local welder make you a cargo platform in this style:



(but without the raised side rails and not necessarily in 20" x 60") and weld to it some fork locks like this:

You'd need to experiment first to see how densly you can pack six bikes before having it built. Your platform will also need some sort of straps to keep the rear wheels secure. Your cost for six bikes would be about $400, I guess.

A system that let you hang the bikes by the top tubes is more of a pain to build from scratch, but would give you better ground clearance.

Here's another thought... buy a super cheap, super lightweight cargo trailer frame like this one. You can get this one for $300, including shipping. For very little more, you could bolt on a deck of marine plywood and then bolt it a bunch of fork locks to it (using high security, one-way bolts). It would be easy to carry six bikes.

Yes, a small cargo trailer , particularly one enclosed , will have multiple uses. and be secure ..

had a whole families bikes fall off the back of their hitch mounted rack,
was on the back of their travel trailer, welding fatigued .. the bundle almost hit me, on my bike,
I was 30 meters ahead of the impact, so when I heard it , I went back and dragged it to the shoulder.

I have a softride that would probably hold six bikes. It has about 8 spots set a bike, but it would put them to close together. 4 fits comfortable. 6 in a pinch. Its a hitch mount rack older about 30 inches deep.

4 on the hitch 2 on the trunk rack or 4 on the hitch and 2 on the roof rack ???

I cannot find any rack that holds more then 5 bikes. The trailer solution looks promising, as it holds all your bikes, and an enclosed trailer could also carry the rest of your gear. Your tow vehicles fuel economy will suffer, and you would need a mid-size sedan or larger. If your in the market for a new vehicle, a full size crew cab pickup would work without a trailer.

I agree with the trailer idea. Most of the weight would be supported by the trailer axle.

Six bikes plus a rack would be a lot of weight. One would need to be very careful to not exceed the tongue weight of their hitch!! Some hitches have quite beefy tongue weights, others...not so much.

There is another company out there that holds six bikes. Same concept as a NSR, but meant for all bikes.

There is a company, Up Right Designs, that makes a bike rack for 6. It's called the Totem Pole and can carry any style or size frame, and mounts to a 2" hitch receiver.
