Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanksgiving Day Riding

Thanksgiving day is also my Birthday this year. In my family I am also the chef. So today I made the following:

Leg of Lamb
Turkey
Mashed Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Green Bean Casserole
Strawberry Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Canned Cranberry sauce (that is what everyone likes)

My wife did contribute the homemade bread

I then rode 35 Miles on the trainer because hey it is my Birthday. Now I am going out to see the movie Interstellar with my daughter.

In short a perfect Birthday and Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone's Holiday was also perfect.

I did about 5 miles of serious hills by my mom's house (the street she lives on has about a 12-15% grade on one side, and a 6% grade on the other, and she lives around the bottom of the bowl) but because it got into the high 80s here in northern San Diego, I stopped riding and swam a mile in the early afternoon before dinner.

I rode 86 miles with a friend today. 36 miles with a group of maybe 150 people, and 25 mile each way to the group meeting spot.

I did pretty well in the group ride, and was able to hang with the lead group of 50 people, but was really working hard to keep from getting dropped.

It was 38 degrees when I left the house at 5am, but in the mid 70s by the time I got home.

It was a high of 18 degrees here, so I was stuck on the trainer. I may venture out on Saturday. The weather forecast is for a high of 49.

Belated Happy Birthday you whippersnapper.

64yo here. Met 5 guys at 0730, 48F for 62 miles, 22mph average, flat and windy. Added another 15 miles getting to the ride and back home.

Lamb chops, sweet peas, sliced carrots, baked sweet potato and carrot cake for desert.

Well..last year...and I must begin there, I ran a local "5K Turkey Trot", and immediately followed with a 35 mile club ride. This year, the turkey trot was moved, and due to crumby parking, I did not go, and it was cold and WET, so I di not ride either But I did manage to get in a blistery and damp 8 mile run. Hope to ride again next year on turkey day.

Sorry you had no 5K TT but great that you got in the 8 miles. My wife worked a 5K yesterday as she has done for years. We have the Space Coast Half Marathon on Sunday. GREAT event and awesome breakfast after, so if you have a bucket list for a half, IMO, it's worth the effort.

FL is a bit of a stretch (from VA). I did run the Marine Corps 1/2 this past May, and LOVED it.

also 20 miles here. a real treat to ride with Jim from Boston, who has made a full recovery after someone rear-ended him on a ride home a couple of years ago and put him in the hospital. we took it slow, esp b/c I needed to break in a new studded tire.

Could not run so did 40 miles it was 28 degrees but wind ok. Felt good but really frozen feet in 2:27 never stopped. Glad to ride given some high hamstring issues.

Instead of getting up early I slept in, ate a nice breakfast and did 18miles by myself. Casual pace and just enjoyed the nice weather.

I usually ride about 50-60 miles to the inlaws (the long way) Thanksgiving morning and then back again Friday but I injured my knee last Friday (jogging! It's bad for you!) and it's just too painful to contemplate right now.

The annual 'turkey ride' draws about 700 for 22-24 miles of fire road w/ lots of climbing.

Pretty mellow conditions this year- not too much mud. One guy pulls a trailer up on the ridge & makes coffee for anyone that wants it (whiskey & whipped cream too!). Post ride free beer at the new mountain bike museum.

I went on the cx bike this time w/ road gearing- ran up a few spots.

My buddy rode 40+ to my mother's house to eat & I gave him a ride home after.

31 miles at first light. I did not mind the cold (39 deg) but the wind made it a bit unpleasant. Though my route was more or less a circle, it never felt like I got the tailwind.

Thanks for the happy birthday's it was a good one. We saw the movie Interstellar. It was very good. Afterwards my daughter got me to do some Black Friday shopping at 1:00 AM. What was I thinking!

She scored a black leather jacket! I got a hug.

On second thought I did just fine. I made my girl very happy.
