Joe,
Went biking a few years ago at Kings Park and saw that marker... it creeped me out.
Past 2 days were breezy but fast. It's gonna get hot so I took advantage of the cooler temps.

What else was creepy......looking up at that tank, the clouds were moving directly away from me, giving the illusion that the damn thing was advancing towards me or toppling.

Greetings, Long Islanders!
I'm spending the summer at Mastic Beach (again), except for a few weekends in NJ and going on longer rides.
I thought I'd ride a century this weekend. My usual route is a loop starting more or less at Moriches; from there, out on one fork, across Shelter Island, back on the other fork. If the wind is out of the east I'll go clockwise, if the wind is in the west (which is more usual) I'll go counterclockwise. It's a pretty good route, I've done it many times.
Anyone want to join me? I'm flexible about the day, could do Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, starting as early in the morning as possible.

I've had some rip-roaring episodes of leg cramps in the past when it gets this hot/humid. IME dialing back the speed just a couple of mph changes things from oppressive to downright pleasant(except when stopped at a red light in the sun)
. We did a "regular" 43 miler to Huntington Bay, just a tad slower than the usual. No problem, although I WAS a little paranoid about it, and sandbagged a bit going up Turkey Lane. I admitted this to Mrs Stoker later, and she said "no wonder that sucked"!

Too hot today, so I waited to 6:00pm and knocked out 50 miles.
I learned that you don't want to be on the Tobay path at dusk. You'll eat a "S" load of bugs.

I got onto the boardwalk/"fitness walk" and took it west, where I can report work has actually begun on the westward extension of that path. I didn't want to cross any barricades so I don't know how much progress has been made.
Even taking it slow I drank 48oz in only 24 miles.

I did an evening after work ride with several old buds today.......we started right at rush hour at 5pm from Roslyn Middle School and headed north/northeast through Old Brookville, Westbury, etc almost to Bayville. 89 degrees at the start. Dialed the speed back a bit to comfortable, so we could bull$hit and gossip like old maids, and even heat-phobic me rarely ever felt hot. The low sun makes for an almost 100% shaded ride at that hour. I don't often ride at that time of day in summer and I was frankly astounded at the low level of traffic. It was barely more, if at all more, than a typical Saturday morning. We only rode 28 miles, but it was delightful and will be repeated.

I was out at 7 yesterday, did my south shore "traffic" ride, an out and back to BP where I use roads that aren't typical commuter routes and agree, it seemed like everybody was away or asleep, on a Thurs morning, go figure. The sun was backing at 8:30 so cut the ride short. Will be glad for a cooler weekend.

Ah, a nice break from the humidity. 63 deg., so good day to do some distance, except for that annoying NE headwind at 15mph. So I headed NE and got pushed home.

It was a fantastic day to do some distance......unfortunately our old pup is doing poorly and we turned off our ride early, so he wasn't unattended for too long. So, 40 miles and off the bike by 1130.

hey can any of your recommend a pretty flat century route around NYC nassau or suffolk that has low vehicle traffic? I am looking at a return trip from like westampton to Montauk but would like some other ideas thx

The Massapequa bike club does the Ancient Mariner. Google the 2013 Ancient Mariner on RWGPS, there’s a map and cue sheet.

I could easily draw you a route in Nassau, but it’s complely dependent on how well you know the roads and I’m not creating a cue sheet. An option is to use RideWithGPS to create a route, and you can pick the starting point.
The Massapequa bike club does the Ancient Mariner. Google the 2013 Ancient Mariner on RWGPS, there’s a map and cue sheet.

Still grooving on the unexpected pleasantness of evening, indeed, rush hour, rides. 6 of us yesterday, 84 F at home but egad, 91 F at the 5pm start in Roslyn. We did a 33 mile loop up through East Island. There was amazingly light traffic except for a stretch of Piping Rock. Being shaded from the low sun makes a big difference and it never felt oppressive, cooling down as we rode.

I was stung twice and stung well by a yellow jacket on Wednesday......today after my right arm assumed slightly less grotesque dimensions I took a leisurely 37m ride up to Oyster Bay. Nice and slow, don't want the Mrs to feel she is "hauling freight" tomorrow.

Had a first.... I stopped at Park and Sunrise for the red light. There was no cars so I crossed. Got part way into town and got pulled over by a cop telling me he could issue me a ticket and if i didn't have ID, he could arrest me. He gave me a warning but seemed like a bit of overkill for 7:00am with no cars in sight.
Anyway, i knocked out 72 miles by riding to Tobay and then to Huntington and finally Kings Park.
So i'll watchout for red lights in Massapequa so i don't run into the same officer. But I did roll past a number when i was out of the area.

I don’t think they can arrest you as it’s not illegal to not carry ID. They can take you to the precinct until you can show some form of ID or otherwise prove who you are. Often they’ll leave your $5,000 Trek on the side of the road in the process “there’s no room in the trunk”. Cops can be pissy about some stuff and I dare say if it were the NYPD you would have gotten a ticket for sure. There’s a member on the roadbikereview forum who bike commutes in NYC, got 2 tickets for rolling thru 2 lights in Queens. The cops saw her on the first one and followed, then waited and stopped her after the 2nd. Possibly poor situational awareness on her part.

It isn't easy protecting Nassau from rogues, hooligans, and the likes of OldnSlow.
I once rode to the same precinct, within minutes of the incident, to report the make, model and plate # of a car, and a description of its driver, who made 3 separate attempts to hit me, 2 of them head on. They invited me to head on home before it got dark.
Felt kind of weak today. The steroids I'm on for my hornet-stung lobster arm are clearly not the same as the ones Lance & Co. used. Going to the meetup straight from work didn't help either. Wife & I opted to leave the group & take a shortcut home from Kings Park.....turns out they only did 2 miles more than our 48 and we beat them by 15 minutes, so I guess we weren't doing so badly after all.
