Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Last summer was the worst fire and smoke year I've ever seen, by a factor of a thousand. I didn't feel safe breathing the air inside my home. One morning, ash rained down from the sky. It was hell on earth.

MT 2, the scene of quite a massacre many years ago when I drove though once in the early 90s. Triple digits in the Spirit R/T and many a prairie dog and bird were slaughtered. I remember picking the bird out of the grill and front air dam when I stopped for gas.

This year I'll be driving through MT in a Jeep Patriot with a terrible CVT that you can't drive over 65 without it overheating.

Going to be a long trip....

From Saturday's ride. This shows just how bad the drought is out here.

SE Missouri--rolling, well maintained roads with minimal traffic. Great place to ride just out the driveway!

Love all these open road pics. Here in the swamps of the Low Country you can't see that far ahead.

A tunnel of foliage ahead, on Guyan River Road near Barboursville, West Virginia. A nice shaded segment of a sunny Sunday morning ride.

Not exactly an empty road, so how about an empty rail-trail? This is the North Bend Rail-Trail near Cairo, W.Va., on a cloudy early-autumn day.
