Impact of Pandemic on Racing

out walking the earth
The northeast hill climbing season is hinging off mount washington. Typically this is a lull in season, having lost the mid two summer races in prior years. If mount washington happens it seems likely there will be 5 races in the series. If Mount washington doesn't happen the rest of the promoters will fold up the tents for the year. If Mount Washington happens without a mechanism for people to opt out I'd probably end my road career. It's an expensive race ($350 plus travel and hotel), and it's a cash grab kind of move as they can only announce 30 days prior. Plus as of now NH is requesting a 2 week quarantine for out of state travelers. At this juncture I've no interest in training to be a bike racer, and traveling a distance and standing in a start queue for 45 minutes with hundreds of people is a non starter for me. If they requested a donation to help keep things going (I reckon they're flush anyhow) I'd be happy to pitch in. Running the race and shrugging when people can't or don't want to go seems rude.

Como Street - (a SoCal race speed hilly ride since the late 1960s) is back up to 70 or so riders - typical for this time of the year. In Nov there were prizes and gift cards for "winning" the final sprint. It would not surprise me for more unsanctioned races to appear with cash and rules that are understood and not written.

If you SoCal folks are looking for fast, do Como street tomorrow. Tustin Market Place - Starbucks - leave @ 8:00.

I used to do it - made for a 90 mile day. The kid does it regularly, but as today is supposed to be fast we are all leaving in about 30 min in the car.

There was some good SoCal talent there today.
Not really racing of course, but a bit faster :-) with a lead out train of Kal, Imeh, Richard.

The kids (pro/s) not having pro races and showing up to rides has an impact.
Trump warned he was going to close the EU travel and that had everyone scatter. Several to USA - group rides.
Looking at Como Sunday, it is just getting faster and faster. The ratio of <30 : >30 is higher than in a long while.
Only a decade ago the fastest guys were 30+. I'll look to see if this changes, once the pros go race again.
There are more unsanctioned events being talked about at least. Some riders are putting up cash for sprints.
Eldorado park was a ride, in Long Beach and turned sanctioned - now being in LA, can't get permits. When the park opens, I expect that race will be on - permits or not.
California Bicycle Racing sent out a poll last week on how important a USAC permit was.
These are not just COVID things. Having group rides that become races has always been around, I am just seeing more of it, again, as it was.
Add to that the fondo's which I'm blaming legislation for vs COVID and there is a lot of impact on racing.

There is a crit scheduled on the 28th at the Colorado State Patrol test track in Golden, CO. Since it's not on city streets, there's no government to mess with, in regards to permitting. Physical distancing guidelines are to be adhered to during sign in, masks, etc... At the start line, you are to wear a mask while staging and prior to the start, they'll give you the signal to remove the masks. With twelve days to go in pre-registration, the lower classes are the typical one, two or five trickling in, except for the the P12, which has 21 pre-registered. LUX has 10 racers in that mix.

I thought you were looking forward to it as your only event of the season. Of course, as philosophical as you are I know it won't make you crazy.

Ah, no. I haven't really been too mindful of my diet, and a one race season seems silly. When Mount Washington falls it takes two other new england races with it, and then the first race would end up being the middle of september. That's just as likely to get canceled.

I believe my son is the only [male] U23 LUX rider and the LUX U23 program will now no longer exist.
Edit ADD
LUX has a camp going in Boulder now. Also a few alum there.

If there's no racing will you ride outside?

out walking the earth
I'm never going to be a 'ride outside' guy again. So, not very much. The only place I ride here is up and down the mountain. Which is one more place that I'd ride than when I lived in suburbia. As a part timer I'd ride the mountain 10-15 times a year. But since I've moved I've only hiked it. The mountain has a pretty short season. There was snow on the upper slopes until memorial day. I'm not a huge fan of the hypothermia inducing descent home. I climb 3 miles of rollers and then 8 steady miles. Gotta get home. Mainly I'll be hiking. 18 miles yesterday, under 8 hours.

We have racing next month, but we also have record cases. I give it 20% chance of happening. its perfect for me at roughly 110 ft gain per mile. That all being said, if I do race I'll have to start doing group rides again...we'll see.
