Schwinn dealer display - or something? need some help.

Hi guys. Picked up something neat. I think its some sort of dealer display, to show customers how to shift? Just a guess. Any info?

Serial number on the headtube says "DH026030."
I can take more pictures if needed. Just trying to figure it out.

The "DHxxxxxx" dates the "frame" part of it to April, 1972, however some components like the shifters look to be late '73 or newer vintage parts. That is a Schwinn made derailleur demonstrator used by dealers to teach customers how the derailleurs worked. A very cool item! Are you interested in selling it?

Here's another of the same relative vintage: https://bikeville.blogspot.com/2010/0...onstrator.html

Here's a much older one: https://www.cocosvariety.com/2012/05/...-pedantic.html

We had a non-Schwinn version in the Raleigh/Nishiki dealer where I worked in college during the 70's bike boom. We'd show people how to shift & make gear choices, but once they left with their bikes, most of them still just eventually pushed both gear levers all the way forward and always rode their "10 speeds" in the small chainring/small cog combination.

+1. Used it all the time in the Schwinn shop where I worked.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I actually am interested in selling it, although I have no idea on price. Your link says they usually go for ~100, yet there's a link for one at 1250 bucks. Shall we meet in the middle? haha.

The one at the shop I worked at had a black Schwinn hand grip on the end of the top tube.
These worked pretty well IF you had the customer do the shifting. and explained errors suggestions as they worked the shift levers. Index shifting really killed off the interest in the "finesse" of shifting.

The one on eBay is from BBCbikes, who is known for listings with completely rediculous prices. I think it's been listed for over a year now, and won't be going anywhere soon. I also suspect it was cannibalized for parts at some time in the past. The freewheel is definitely not original, and I suspect that the rear derailleur and crank handle were replaced as well. Yours on the other hand looks to have the correct parts for a unit of that vintage.

I noticed most of the differences, and figured his price was insane.

If it's only worth a hundred bucks, I might as well keep it.

That's what I would do, it's a cool piece. If you don't mind my asking, where did you find it?

I don't know, that Schwinn Varsity seems like a damn good deal at only $230+$150 shipping.

Hell, it even says it's free of Major bends, dents, or cracks, though hasn't been looked over by a mechanic and they recommend a tune-up before use. So you're at what, only a little over $400 to be riding around on a sweet Varsity that only has minor bends, dents, or cracks. Can't beat that deal!

Exactly!
And the poor Simplex derailleurs had to pick up all that chain slack. No wonder why the idler wheels are all ground up on old Prestige derailleurs.

I well remember one of these demonstration shifting set ups at our LBS Schwinn shop here in Pensacola, FL when I was a teenager in the early 70's. Friends owned the shop, great people, like an extra mom and dad for me. Mechanic was on older gentleman with many, many years of wrenching experience on not only Schwinns but the European road bikes. He taught me a lto about my Bottecchia and Campagnolo components. I love to own one of the demos, as long as it was not from BBC. No way!

If it were a Campagnolo Groupset............

I have asked elsewhere and not received a good answer. Does BBC actually sell their bikes at that price? If what I think...NO.....then exactly what is their business model listing them so stinking high?

I'm local to BBC and asked one of their employees in the ebay operations unit if they actually sold any of the bikes they listed. The employee acknowledged that the prices were pretty crazy most of the time but that they did sell quite a few of them. I guess the owner is going on the "sucker born every minute" theory. He doesn't need to sell them anyway. He's an enormously successful businessman here in Madison and owns & runs the largest retail bicycle operation in town.

Next time you encounter a frame that has been in a serious front end collision, consider giving it new life as a shift demonstrator. I remember seeing one of these at the local Schwinn shop, ca. 1970. We did not have one at the Peugeot/Nishiki dealership where I worked part-time, so we used to do similar customer transmission training with a bike, preferably the customer's own, on a shop stand.

My Dad used this Schwinn shifting demonstrator extensively at the bike shop that he owned and operated for 27 years. It sure served its purpose.

Excellent idea - I knew there was reason I kept that old Probike frame that I only found out was bent AFTER the respray - it'll be easy to do - never thought of anything like this before, but it's really neat

There were two recently listed on eBay that did not sell. They were apparently not relisted so you might want to contact the sellers to see if they might still be available:
